My "I love my G80" story goes like this.....

Had my 02 Z71 since new, did the FIPK, Borla, and Hypertech when new. Beat on the truck at the dragstrip a bit and towed my old 5.0 Mustang.

Years and miles later the tranny craps out around 95k miles. Sun shell cracked, tranny started slipping. I had it built with Vette servos and every bulletproof part.

I babied the truck even though the tranny builder said hammer on it all you want.

A week went by and I'm leaving the Navy base that I work on and BANG!!!!!!! Then clunk, bang, clunk, clunk.

I get the wounded pooch to my trusted fixit shop and pulling the diff shows what appears to be some spider gears that a gremlin has been pounding with a 2 pound hammer.

The mighty G-80 went out like a punk doing 35 MPH, not during some crazy driving.

The guy at Randy's Ring and Pinion called it the "Generic 80" and said that it is a failure prone POS.

Now I rock the True-trac and am happy.

Soooo...the tranny weaknesses are gone, G80 is history, and only the stupid steering shaft clunk remains.

Rock on G80!!!!!

Alrighty guys- I got the G80 in, Yes a G80! I was concerned at first if I would get a 'clunk' from it engaging from wheel speed dfferences(and what thicker fluid I'd use to combat that) and if it would hold both tires under traction under throttle on a dirt road etc...... Well guys- none of the above happened; the unit operates transparently and is there when ya need it. I spun'em for about 400 feet on some hardpack as the conventional wisom says that the dif opens above like 20 mph. It held longer than that and I looked back to find 2 uniform ruts in the terra firma. Now all I need is a truckload of snow this winterto test it out and not have this happen again.........

My G80 worked fine for many miles, and some people may never break one. But, like the F-body crowd, it's always a question of "Is mine gonna be the rearend that dies?"

You'll probably enjoy years of use from it.

ok not to rain on the G-80 parade but did anyone else read the main story and laugh?

unless u were racing a moped or a 500cc or less motorcycle there is NOT A SNOW ***** CHANCE IN HELL u beat a crotch rocket to 100. with a missed 2nd shift (I've done it) Ill still see over 100mph on my speedo before I hit the top of a standard length on ramp..

Just wondering if anyone else caught that..

I have hit 100 in the truck getting on the interstate by the end of the ramp. But I have to agree, its would be hard to beat most bikes.

My g80 story consist of the 89 in my avatar. The previous owners grandson torchered the truck . Tore up the trans and all but snapped the rear axle. I haven't been able to replace it yet, but the g80 is a real pleasure. You never know if it is going to kick in or not off road. I pulled an old truck out of the field, it work the whole time, once out of the woods, it stopped working. So I got my buddy to come hook to the front of my truck, then about half way around the field it kicked in and descided to pull again.

A site to see however, 1999 Chevy K2500 454 torsion leveled on 285/75R16s, chained to my stock truck, chained to a mid-70's chevy long bed with no front or rear axle.

It hurt my neighbors feelings a little that his 454 wouldn't budge the old chevy, and my stock tired 350 truck walked out with it. However, he was trying not to scratch his truck with about 100ft of chain attached to it. I got about 15 feet of chain, drove down into the woods and hooked up close. Putting all the weight on the back of the truck made the difference.

here in AZ our on ramps (most) are maybe 1000 ft. roughly

I've gotten my truck about 90-95, already on the top of the ramp ready to merge. I hit 100 about to hit the peak on my bike and backed out of it. Remember the Parish video of him racing a 600RR?? yeah, a twin turbo 408 kept up ok with that. And thats only a 600.
