Default ??Why do the GMT 900 trucks have drum rear brakes??

I even saw a high dollar Z71 extra cab LTZ and it had drum brakes on the back end. I see no option at chevy's or gmc's website for rear disc brakes. What gives??

They went to a 14" disc in the front and a larger rear drum in '05 "for improved braking" but more like a cost savings.

If you order the V-Max trailering package, you get rear disk.

I think they were having too many problems with the rear disc brakes..like **** poor e-brake design so they went back to using drums. I guess that was cheaper than just designing a better disc brake system. My 03 has the rear disc's and my e-brake currently does nothing. Just one more thing to fix.

My '05 Sierra SLT has rear drum. Is there a fairly cost effective way to convert to disc?

Jeez. Why the hell don't they go back to the F-body e-brake design with the internal drum designed into the disc itself?
Nice trucks, too bad I will not get one untill they have disc brakes on the rear end.
Stupid.

Yeah gimmy rear disc brakes. I miss the seized calipers and the pulsating rotor runout, not to mention the previously mentioned malfunctioning emergency brakes and the (if you pay somebody else to do the brakes) freekin expense to fix it all. Rear Disc brakes on a truck are useless. Rear brakes don't do a hell of a lot anyway and the drums do it just fine and have done so for a long time. The front discs aren't subjected to the back wash of road salt and all the other crap on the roads like the rears are. The rear discs live in a more hostile and dirty environment and drums back there are better suited by their design. Rear Discs on a Corvette or other performance cars are less trouble because the owners don't drive them in the bad weather. I used to work on heavy fire trucks in the 80's and the manufacturers switched to disc brakes because of the extra surface area they provide. They were so troublesome and expensive they switched back to drums and never looked back. IMO be careful what you wish for.......you know the rest.
BTW GM was getting huge repair numbers for warranty on these brakes.
