We're all gonna have to do something!!

Well I visit several websites a day and the thing that a lot of people have been talking about is the high gas prices. The main reason prices are so high is that the Arabs know we have to have it and we are willing to pay whatever to get it. I heard someone say the other day that Americans have the most inefficient transportation system in the world, and I upon thinking about it, I would have to agree.
How many people do you see driving by themself each day who are basically going to the same area to work? That's right, almost everyone. What I would propose is that anyone who could run by someone house you work with and just pick them up and ride together. Or if they have a vehicle that gets better gas mileage than yours, just ride with them. If there were two or more people riding together to the same place or same area, it would cut demand by a tremendous amount. Think about it, much less traffic, much less fuel being burnt, it would be an easier drive for all of us. Over just a few weeks as our demand continued to go down, prices, I believe, would go down by a lot for gas.
It may be a little inconvenient for some and it may not work at all for others, but over time it should make a huge difference in the price at the pump. The arabs know they have us bent over a barrel and it's time for us to hit them where it hurts, in the pocketbook.
I've heard of people trying to organize fuel-strikes, where nobody buys fuel for a day or two, but that will never work because we are driving the same amount and will have to buy that fuel sooner or later. With giving someone a ride the fuel being saved is not being burnt at all. I may be pissing in the wind here, but we as a country have to find a way to not be so dependent on the middle east for our fuel, or rather fuel prices.
If I were president, here's what I would do. Drill in Alaska, get everything ready to where we can be self-dependent no matter what. Tell the middle Eastern countries in a nice but firm way that we no longer need their oil because the price is just simply too high. They may call our bluff and tell us go ahead, that's where having everything ready would come in handy and we could actually do it ourself for a while. Meanwhile the sheiks will start losing billions of dollars out of their personal accounts and they will come to us to see what it will take to get our business back. Because we now have the leverage of having our own oil at the ready, we can simply tell them we will pay x amount of dollars per barrel and no more. If they balk, we go back to just using our oil. Sooner or later they will come to where we want to be as far price goes and we can stop using our oil and save it for when there is defininite need for it.
Well so for being so longwinded, I hope you guys take to heart what I say.

It went up 23 cents in the last 18 hours here also. There's a couple of suburbs of Tulsa that are allowing people free ads in their paper to look for others to ride with them to work. They have started a car pool section. They are matching people that go to the same area and getting them together for car pools. It's seems to be working pretty good. Just need more to start doing this.

You forgot to mention the gas companys that are reporting record breaking profits!!! And think about this, how long does it take for crude oil to be turned into gasoline. The DAY the stock market reports a increase in crude oil prices the gasoline prices shoot up!!! WTF!!!!!! The companys are not going to feel the impact that fast!
Put blame where it should be!!! We are the idiots who built this country without adequate mass transportation. Every single person has to live in a big single family house spread out across suburbia. No one will carpool. And we sit back while the oil tycoons and gasoline companies get fatter..... I call B.S. We need to get off our lazy asses and do something. People, I beleive, have become static and unwilling to stand up for anything. While I have my own opinion, I appluad both sides of the anti war demostrations, at least they are doing something to show their opinion.......
OFF RANT!!!

Ya'll have made some good points. They keep talking about drilling in Alaska but it never gets done. If everbody would get together; a difference would be noticeable IMO. Another problem we have right now is that China is stock-piling oil right now so our supply is less. I think there is plenty of crude available for refining; its just a matter of getting it. I mean damn, we used to have gas wars where the price kept getting lower, and now its the other way around. Or it feels that way anyway.

what the fck is it going to take for bush to open the god damn reserves and bring the price down. these people in louisiana mississippi and alabama have lost everything... and if that werent enough, they are now going to have to pay over 3 dollars a gallon for gas to put in a car they most likely dont have anymore... or are living out of.this is a sick state of affairs... i just want to puke.gas here just went up to 3 dollars a gallon, in a scene remeniscent of the gas crisis in the 70`s.. gas stations that were still charging 2.41 were PACKED, with cars waiting their turn.some of these stations sent their clerks out and promptly changed their price to 3 bucks.. gouging anyone?people were scrambling out of these stations and hauling *** to others that were selling cheaper. its chaos, with no relief in sight. fck bush, that smug little bastard.

Loud5.3, that is a very valid point, but I don`t totally agree with you. Americans are spoiled and we have been living well off of our own greed. Now, that countries such as China and India are starting to feed off our own greed, they are becoming booming industrialized nations taking away the manufacturing that we were once leaders of. Once upon a time we were the largest oil consuming nation without much competition. There were oil liners full of oil floating out in the ocean without any destination that would always come to America to unload their crude oil at a cheap cost. Those ships are gone now. We are competing on a world market now to obtain our oil. We are dependant now on relying on other countries to supply us oil due to our own greed. It is simply not cost effective to for us to be totally independant of any other country to supply our own oil. That greed is one BIG reason why we have such an influx of illegal aliens crossing our borders. Anyways, our oil refinaries that convert our oil to gasoline are a dying breed. Why? Because we have voted liberal politicians into office that have set such high restrictions on the types of polution they cause that the oil refinaries are becoming in short supply. You want to make a difference? Do it at your voting poles. Don`t sit back and say my vote doesn`t make a difference. Pay attention to your candidates running for office. Don`t pay attention to their campaign promises on whether or not you want to vote for them. Research their past history and what that candidate represents.
The Alaskan proposal would take almost 20 years to actually see the oil pumped out of the ground from there, but your liberals are keeping it from happening. I`m all about conservation, but I`m also a realist.
