If you move to the Houston area I would suggest the Bay Area. I lived in League City before I went off to college. I used to work in Pearland and know a bunch of people that live there. You can get nice, large houses for cheaper than other areas of Houston that are older and more established. Price will ultimately depend on how nice the materials are in the house.

Austin would be best best place to live but property is way too high right now.

to live n die in southern cali
Im in the same boat as Tokez. My ghetto house in Santa Ana is about 1450 sq feet and worth 400K plus. Its really rediculous how the prices have skyrocketed. We are selling early next year and building a 3500 sq ft house in Temecula (wine country) where we have 20 acres. The price to build that house will be less than what we sell our current home.

Friendswood and Pearland are good wooded areas to live in.

It doesnt snow much in dallas. I live about an hour north of dallas and we get 1 or 2 snow storms a year on average. Most of the time it is gone by the afternoon. What kind of fishing are you looking to do? Some of the best bass fishing lakes in the country are in northern texas. You have Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Fork within two hours of each other. Friday evening a friend of mine called me to tell me he caught a 15lb 11oz bass on Fork 2 nights before. What kind of area are you looking to live in? Small town or off in the sticks? It is nice here becuase we are not far from the big city, but far enough not to get the traffic.

I live in a master planned community called Summerwood. I had a house built this year (2300 sq ft, 4 bed, 2.5 bath, 3 car garage) for $177K

We are situated right on lake Houston, with boat ramps less than a mile down the road at the park. Freshwater lake. TONS of tall trees. New 1/8 mile drag strip is 3 miles away. 19 miles from downtown Houston.

Or, I'd recommend Conroe, TX or the community NW of Houston called "The Woodlands". Lake Conroe is very popular for fishing. Anywhere north of Beltway 8 here in Houston is pretty much tall woods and lakes.

????

Not really, I'd hardly consider Friendswood or Pearland as "wooded". I grew up in Friendswood. Go check out Kingwood or The Woodlands or Summerwood and you will see a HUGE difference.

Lubbock is great! But it is kinda that dessert you were talking about. I got a house built in a new development 2300 sq ft. for $135K. Few fishing lakes around.

I want to be close to good fishing places, not too big of a city unless it is spread out (I hate places like San Francisco or our Bat Area), somewhere between Dallas and Houston/Beaumont. I'd like it to be somewhat wooded. None of that desert crap you always see Texas portayed as in the movies. I guess essentially on the outskirts of either Dallas or Houston/Beaumont. I am looking to buy a decent lil house for about $200K and DO NOT WANNA BE NEAR ANY GHETTO AREAS!!! That's why I am leaving Cali behind.

My friends that live or lived in Texas have me mixed up. One grew up in Dallas and said go there because Houston is too hot/humid and the city is falling apart. The other lives in Beaumont again after a brief stint in Ca. and says the humidity isn't that bad and it's a nice area to live in and the houses are decidedly cheaper there than Dallas. Also finding a job shouldn't be too hard i either place compared to Ca. i assume.

Any suggestions??
I'm from Lake Buchanan just outside Austin. The texas hill country is the most beautiful place i've ever seen, and i've been all over Europe and Ireland.
Houses on the lake can be had for 100-200k, and the fishing is great. My family owns Black Rock Cottages on the lake, a small resort, and if you want you can stay there for a little R&R time and check out the area. I think You'll like it.
