Default Timing on 4.3

How do u set the timing on the 4.3 without the round distributor. This one has 3 plugs on 1 side 3 on the other. You can't spin it any once it's in. If we go a tooth in either direction it won't start.
Right now it starts but sometimes takes a lil throttle.

I know the late 90s 350 only allowed for minimal timing changes, but a common issue was a worn distributor gear, it would cause a cam and crank coilation (i think thats what they called it) code. Might look there.

If it were the gear wouldn't there be play? There is no movement once in thus no way to advance or retard timing

Might be a few teeth off. Or 180 out. My truck was down for two weeks from this problem when I swapped intake manifolds.

Why was the distributor taken out?

Changed the intake gasket.

If it was 180 it wouldn't start. It starts and drives but has a hard time starting. 1 tooth either way and it won't start.
Tried turning it by grabbing the cab and turning like u do with a gen1 but it won't budge. Do u pop the rotor off and turn it a bit?

Good thread...I was going to ask the same question, doing intake gaskets on my 96 4.3 Blazer...what a PITA...lost a 16mm crowsfoot in the process and figured out that my torque wrenches need re-calibrating....hope I get it back together OK tomorrow...

So is there any procedure to setting the timing? Possible wire that has to be jumped?
