The bottom goes on first. You put it over the handle, move the top almost in place, then attch the bottom and snap in the top. I dont know where you live, but you should heat it up if it is cold outside, like leave it in front of a heater vent or something. I just did mine a few days ago, and it was like 10 degrees outside. It went on okay.

I'm pretty sure thats how I did it, it just made sense that the bottom goes in first then the to snaps in. I'pretty sure temp is not an issue ,as I live in South Louisiana, I think it was in the high 60's low 70's yesterday afternoon. I think I may have had a defective part, if thats possible.

Mine broke to, just use some 3M double stick tape. It has worked for me for over a year.

The bezels come with 2 strips of 1/2in thick double stick tape (I ripped them off when I took it back off after the tabs broke) but exactly where else did you put the tape to hold it on?? THANKS!!

Its not defective it is just poor design. If you are not very very careful it is going to brake.
Take the 1/2 thick foam tap and cut it down the thickness of you new 3M tap for both side, then reuse it. I also put two lawyers of 3m where the radius and the area that goes inside the tailgate ( top area ).

With the tailgate handle out take you bezel put it in the hole and move it around you will then see where the bezel makes contact with the tailgate skin. It hard to explain.
