Starting issue...
#1
This has been an ongoing problem with my truck for awhile now. Didn't start until after we put the truck back together after the we took the turbo off last year.
Initial start up in the morning is just fine. Cranks over, fires right off.
Once I drive ANYWHERE, even 5minutes away, after I shut the truck off and go to start it back up, it drags really bad and sometimes won't start. If I put jumper cables on it, it fires right off.
I drove it to work today. On my lunch hour I took it to the car wash ~5min of driving time. Shut it off, washed for ~30min. Went to start, it drug a couple times then started.
Now say I drive and hour or so, if I shut the truck off it may not start without jumper cables, unless it sits for an hour or so.
I know it sounds like a starter, but for some reason, I just don't think that's the problem.
My battery is located in the bed and all connections were soldered inside the copper connections.
I have a new battery, new alternator, only thing I haven't replaced is the starter.
Is there anything I can test to see what's actually happening?

To add to this, I was having a weird problem of the engine just dying while going down the road. All the electronics would stay on; lights, stereo, etc...but the engine would just die. I'd have to stop and restart the truck. Sometimes it would take two or three times before it would stay running.
It hasn't done this in prolly 6months though.

I would have to assume that the problem is the battery relocation. Do you have one single cable running from the battery all the way up? What size cable are you using? I am thinking that the engine is warm and transferring heat to the starter. Also the increased cable length is not helping all the needed power get there. Can you check the temp of the starter and cable with an infrared thermometer? One thing you could try is cooling the starter with a garden hose when it is warm and see if that helps the problem.

Its an optima red top, I've had an O'reilys battery, did the same thing, stock battery, same thing.
Would a bad connection cause an issue like this? At first it didn't really bother me, was just kind of annoying, but it always eventually started when this first started happening. Now sometimes it takes jumper cables, or for the truck to sit for a couple hours. djparker
