PROBLEM with 454 setup
#1
Hi everybody,
I wish that i can find any solution for my engine setup. im going to hate my truck because of this problem.
I have an Chevrolet C-10 1968 with Big block 454 engine:
Edelbrock intake
Edelbrock Dual 750 Carbs
Cam start on 3000 Rpm
Th400 Transmission 3 speeds
Back system
My problem is with the BLACK SMOKE, i told that the engine got too much fuel than required.
Distributer not working good, some times 8 plugs works some times 5 plugs, i think it need to be tighten good
I just bought MSD ignition 6AL , Blaster 2 coil, 8mm wires, Accel Spark plugs. ( im going to fit them next week )
Dose that will makes any changes ?
Some suggested to fit Fuel Pressure Regulator, dose it help ?
Anybody thinks that the carbs needs to be adjusted ?
Thanks in advance

Sounds reasonable that it is running too rich of an AFR.
Been a long time but I think most carburated engines only require 6-8psi of fuel pressure. If the fuel pressure is to high it will over come the needle and seat of the fuel bowls and flood/ run rich. So yes it is important to set the correct fuel pressure.
Beyond that it can be the jetting of the carbs. Idle circuit jets to large or the primary and secondary jets. Double the carbs and I can see it dumping way too much fuel than necessary if not set up correctly.

Thank you very much for the replay
Tommorow the worker will come to my house to fix the distributer, plugs, plugs wires, MSD ignition and the coil.
I wish if that will fix that black smoke
Thanks bro

No, you do not have to change to single carb, but the only reason, besides looking cool, to do a dual carb setup is that the engine requires more CFM of airflow than one carb can provide. A stockish to mildly built 454 will not flow much if any over 750CFM of air. A single 750-850CFM carb may be enough and much easier to tune.
Having dual carbs basically requires each carb to meter about 1/2 the amount of fuel required through out the RPM range that they normally would meter. If the carbs were not setup for a dual carb setup you will run way to rich and see black smoke.

Tomorrow i will take the car to the garage to check the fuel pressure and install Fuel Pressure Regulator. i will try to let him reduce the fuel flow.
two electrical technicians came today, they checked the whole electrical system and they said now its need a fuel check.
Bro, just i want to know the advantage of using Dual carbs ?

Probably no advantage to running dual carbs. 2 carbs look cooler but chances are it will make no more power and more difficult to setup.

dual carbs are for nothing but looks unless you have over 1000hp, and even then a big enough carb will do the job. dual carbs on your motor would call for roughly two 400cfm carbs but they are still going to be a PITA to set-up and get to run properly. if i was you i would change to a single carb or do a bunch of engine work to use the dual carbs you have now

Thanks Guys, i don't have enough experience in that stuff.
But dose the Fuel regulator can solve this problem ?
Because im taking the car tomorrow to the garage
another question, what about fix a 502 engine and swap one of the carbs from the 454 engine to the 502 with MSD, Coil, Plugs wires and New Plugs its sounds good ?
or
Get a LS1 engine and sleep in peace ?
LOL
