I have a question about taking a motor out of storage. I will be needing to swap motors because of a rod knock in this one. But the question is what should be done to help prevent damage to the engine? I had backed off the rocker bolts to close the valves before storage and taped off the intake and exhaust ports. I also made sure that all coolant and oil passages were taped off too. Any advice on restarting the engine would be great

pull the fuel pump fuse and spin it over about 5-10 sec a few different times that way oil will run through the motor imo. id then put the fuse back and spin it over. if it cranks on the first try id let it run 15sec or so and kill it then crank it again. id let it idle till its almost to operating temp then ease it out the driveway and see how it acts.

If its in a truck, I say go with above advice. If its on a stand, I'd spin the crank a few times and feel how smooth it turns. If the crank turns fairly easily, I'd swap to it. My LQ9 sat for months, possibly over a year. It was stored indoors, but not near as well as your engine. I swapped the cam out, and we dropped in the engine. Fired up, and 500+ miles later runs good w/ no mechanical issues whatsoever.
