Default Octane.....

Alright guys,
I hope someone can finally answer this question for me because i get mixed answers on it. I have a 2006 crewcab chevy with the 5.3 and im trying to figure out if there is any benefit to running 93 octane gas in it. I always like to put the best in it even though its not a race truck by any means but just so its running on the good stuff. Now, does it actually benefit at all performance wise or is it better for the truck?

I hear some people say the truck is designed to run on 87 octane so thats what i should run and that anything higher is a waste of money. On the other hand, i have people that say the higher the octane, the better no matter what its going into. 93 octane is the best pump gas you can buy and if you have the money for it, run it because its better all around for your truck and for performance.

Now, what is the verdict? Is it actually better to run 93 or 89 octance gas in your truck even if its got a factory tune that will allow you to run 87?

its a waste of money if your not tuned for high octane. But if it makes you feel better you could run 89 but i think you should just save your money till you get a tune.

i would just run 89 then till you get your tune bro. but you dont have too. Damn gas is too F N expensive to pay for higher octane than your truck's computer can make use of IMO.

I agree when you say it like that. lol Is it even worth running the 89 over the regular 87 in the meantime?

Do you have access tuning software? If not it's hard to say. If you do it would be easy to log and see if you have any KR. It will run the best on the lowest octane fuel that you can run and not have any KR.

higher octane just allows you to run a higher timing and stuff. if your truck isnt being told to run higher timing than stock then its just a waste.

93 usually has better additives though for less carbon buildup on valves, etc. My grandpa worked for Shell oil in the laboratory all he did was test gasoline for 40 years there after WWII. He told me that there is all kinds of "trash" in 87. Now granted he retired from there 15 years ago somethin tells me its probably still the case today. He always put 89 or higher in cars I wonder why? I run 93 in my truck but I have to so...

Octane is resistance to burning....the higher octane you go, the harder it is to get a complete burn....go with the lowest you can get away with.
