Possibly, reason being if file (a) from the 2k pcm was a "direct" cut/paste to pcm (b) and if the vin carried over from pcm (a) that could be the issue of causing vats to enable as I stated before with the difference in keys. If you have a scan tool hook it up and see if the vin stored in the pcm matches YOUR 2001 chsssis vin.......

As a case in point I took a 2002 truck fully loaded and swapped EVERYTHING into my 2k but the pcm, I did the ENTIRE inside/engine/ chassis/ steering column. Every wiring harness as my truck didn't have the 411 pcm and was a plain Jane W/T. Welllll the truck wouldn't start.... which I anticipated, swapped pcms from the donor truck into my truck, fired right up.

Point I am getting at tho, is my pcm vin is stored as a 2002 Silverado, my chassis vin is a 2k. But the bcm/pcm/ ign. Key/cylinder are all matching from the 2002 truck. But I have tried to "change the vin" with HPT but no success.

I hope that helps lift some of the fog

I tried the PCM out of my old 2K truck, does the exact same thing.

By this article, I am guessing if its VATS related - the security light would be on the dash? Mine doesn't do that. I am getting an SES light and the battery icon is lit. I am about to test the fuel pressure next...

Fuel pressure is good, right at 60-61 psi when priming the pump. I have the BCM out of my old truck. As a last resort, I am going to swap it out and see what happens. If that doesn't do it, I am all out of ideas.

Swapped BCMs, no change. I need a way to scan it now and see what the SES is for.

Just finally had help to check for spark - none. I put my fingers against the injectors to try to feel injector pulse, again - nothing.

Cam position sensor is plugged in and no wires pinched. The same goes for the crank position sensor, had the starter out earlier to check that as well.

No spark, no injector pulse sounds like no crank signal, do you have another crank sensor you could swap in....

I have a couple of sensors I could try. Do they go bad sitting?

no but they are permanent magnet sensors and if they sitting on or near other metals with different polarities it could change the polarity

You could swap the engine/trans back into the other truck and see if it starts, then start over

Why did we get away from VATS? Sounds like all the symptoms point towards this especially if crank and cam sensors have been chased down checking out okay. I bench ran a 5.3 that had the same exact issue. Originally thought that i have removed VATS from the system, and come to find out I hadn't uploaded the file yet (a "thought you did" moment). Re-flashed and the 5.3 started right up.
