Need Help, 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500, parking brakes will not Hold.
Working on a friends truck, put all new shoes, front back and Parking brake shoes. I have the parking brake shoes as close as possible, but will not hold the truck. They didn't hold in the first place, that's why I changed them, even after adjusting them. What else do I need to do?
Thanks.
Thanks.

There is also an adjuster on the pedal assembly itself you may need to adjust, actually more than likely need to adjust with having replaced everything else. Check the cables to make sure they move then you need a friend, one person pulls up on the e brake pedal, other pulling the front cable forward, insert a screwdriver or some sort of lock pin through the pedal assembly to lock the cam the cable rides on in place, do whatever work or adjustments you need from that point, then do the same thing to remove the screwdriver and apply and release the pedal 3 times to adjust the self adjuster and it should hold. The shoes shoukd have something like .02" clearance between them and the drum.

I have drum brakes so it's a little different but with wolf's comment, I used my parking brake everytime I stopped with my old grand prix that had rear disc/drum parking brake and they never let me down in 5 years. Using them often sure does keep things working right.

My theory and no real factual basis behind it, is that when they are used regularly the adhesive that keeps the shoes on the backing plate stays pliable, partially because they are typically put against a somewhat warm drum. When they arent used it basically dries out and gets brittle and lets go.
