Real easy solution guys. This happened on my Y2K. It is fuel deposits being left on the fuel level sending unit on the inside of the tank.
Here is what you do....
Wait till tank is damn near empty, drop the tank. Remove the fuel pump assembly completely from the tank and bring it to the work bench.
Now on my '00 there is one plug for the fuel level sending unit that also has two wires on it for the pump, on the '02 that I saw, the flsu and the pump had two different plugs.
Once you get the flsu off the side of the pump housing, you will notice a clip on it. Remove that clip and VERY CAREFULLY remove that "board" with the two wires atached to it. BE VERY CAREFUL when you do this because you will see the "fingers" attached to the float arm that NEED to make contact with this "board" so it can tell how much fuel you have.
Now that you have the "board" out of the flsu housing. CLEAN IT, I used a wire brush and some contact cleaner. Don't go nuts on this thing, just a good cleaning of it will be fine. Once it is clean, CAREFULLY put it back into the flsu housing, put the clip in and you are done.
Then just put the pump back in the tank, the tank back up under the truck and go fill it up!!! The worst that can happen is you have no fuel gauge. Then you will be stuck buying a new unit.
But this is exactly what I did and it works, I haven't had a problem with it in about 3 months!

Had this issue twice with my '02 Kon. SpeedExtreme just described what a dealership does. I've seen it personally. the first time it happened, they did what Speedextreme said. The second time it happened, both the sending unit and the pump decided to say "screw you". Would I do it myself? If I was looking to save $100+ on a sending unit, probably. At the time, I lived in an apartment complex, and wanted my Kon to have "new" parts... ONLY b/c my wife was driving it as a primary vehicle with two young sons as passengers, and my job had me traveling more times than before. After $290 in parts and $299 in labor, I had a running vehicle before quittin' time the same day they took it. At the time, I paid for piece of mind knowing my wife & kids wouldn't be stranded b/c of unpredictable parts.
