Default Looking for a truck to tow my z28. Truck guys please help.

Well my Z28 has gotten to the point where its gonna start breaking stuff and I need a truck to trailer it too and from the track. I was looking at getting a used S10 V6 4X4 but wasnt sure if it could tow my car on a trailer. Im looking at spending around $8000-$10,000 dont have much to spend. Truck will be for the most part a beater that I drive in the snow hence. Any other trucks you guys would suggest for around that price range that can still tow a Fbody and possible my 70 Chevelle SS?

a V6 s-10 has a tow rating of 4000lbs. Thats not enough. You need at least a 4.8 in the new style or a 5.0 in the old body.

I wouldnt use a s-10 to pull a camaro.Yes it will pull it but the first time you have to do a panic stop you may rear-end someone.I strongly recommend at least a half-ton fullsize for towing your camaro. Also make sure you have a brake controller and brakes on the trailer. Not only will you be safer, you will reduce the chance of sway with the bigger truck.I tow heavy trailers all the time(20,000 lbs)and trust me its very scary when your trailer starts jerking the *** end of your truck all over the place at 70 mph.If it gets too out of hand you will flip.I think you could pick up a 95-98 half-ton 2 wheel drive for what your looking to spend.

I got a 99 Tahoe to tow with, and to use a a beater.

My research said that an S10 chassis would be too short, but you for sure want a towing capacity of 5000 lbs so that's the minimum you need to use.

I agree. I tow my jeep behind the truck in my sig without much problem until I get into the mountains on a 5% grade or higher. With your budget, I would also recommend a 95ish 2wd 1500 with the 350 engine in it. Then get ya a tandem axle trailer with brakes on both axles, hook ya a trailer brake controller in the truck, bolt on a class IV or V 3pt hitch and let her ride.

Another thing you might want to consider is how to get the car on the trailer when you breakdown. At the track I've seen guys jacknife their truck/trailer then get the wrecker to winch in on the trailer for them. I'm not sure if every track wrecker will do that?

Your truck needs to out weigh your trailer. You can find a 96-98 chevy 1/2-3/4 ton with Vortec 5.7 in that price range.Have fun shopping.Jim

Buy my truck!! I'm negotiable on the price... It runs excellent! I added an electric brake controller, and a reciever hitch to it for just this purpose, but some stuff has happened and I need to get rid of the truck quick! Make me an offer...

That is incorrect. It is 5,000 - 5,500lbs depending on whether you have 2WD or a 4x4. I've owned 7 (at last count) S-Series trucks (both S-10's and Blazer's and a Bravada) and I've had my Camaro, my 1966 Pontiac and a 1968 Chevelle on my MacLander 18' flatbed hauler.

The engine will pull it, it'll have to grunt a little more than a V8 will, but it'll do it. It's the chassis that becomes an issue. Softer springs and shocks would generally have the back end of the vehicle sagging considerably.

So I'd only use the S-trucks to tow if my Tahoe wasn't available.

As mentioned, I had a Tahoe too. A 97 4dr, LT, 4x4 with the Vortec 5700. Much better a tow vehicle. It pulled all the same vehicle's mentioned above.

Well now I have a 2500HD with the 8.1 and all I have to say is "what trailer?"

So what am I saying? Preferably you need at least a half ton truck to pull it, but if worse comes to worse and budget is an issue, an S-Series truck WILL do it. Just make sure it has a 3.73 gear. The biggest available in an S-Series truck.
