keep us posted on what the noise might have been. i need to put a built tranny in my truck.

 

Had a similar noise with mine in the bellhousing area and thought it was the flexplate. Re & Re the tranny, flexplate ok. Turns out the right side catalytic converter was rattling inside. Changed the converters, noise gone.

 

Off topic slightly

my mr2 was making an awful rackitt, thought for sure it was a loose flywheel or catalytic covnerter ratteling inside

turned out to be the timming belt tensioner the noise was so bad that it in no way did it resemble a tensioner

the sound was horrendous

Thats why i dont run cats, one less thing to worry about. lol Sucks that you went through all that to find out it was in you exhaust.

My tensioner went out twice but both times its been a high pitched squealing noise.

Havent heard from the tranny guy so apparentley he is still working on it. Need to give him a call.

 

Well the guy doing the trans. work on my truck fired it up today without the trans. and its still making that that god awfull noise! Looks like i get to pull cam and check the lobes, then pull the heads and check the lifters. I dont think its bearings because i didnt find any material in the oil filter or the oil i drained out. Can lifters fail instantly or do they gradually go out like bearings?

EDIT: NEVERMIND, IT WAS THE FLEXPLATE.

 

wow, the trans. guy was wrong. He called an said the bolts that hold the flexplate to the crank were loose. He torqued them all down and the noise is still there. Ive read everything i could care to read about ls1s knocking. When i put the ls7 lifters in, i didnt do any research on them. I dont know if its what caused the same problem im having, but they say to use ls7 lifter trays and I used the trays off my 4.8 with 190k miles them.

Now instead of driving it back from the shop, i get to haul it back. I was really wanting to see how it drove with the new stall. Looks like im going to be pulling the cam to check for wear, then pull the heads and put new lifters/trays.

that doesn't matter . . .

The DOD lifter trays are different, other than that, 4.8 - 6.2 are the same

 

i honestly think he should have pulled the flexplate off to see if its showing signs of being cracked.
