luckily it didn't do any damage to the tailgate when the cables broke. a few weeks after that happend, a tree limb fell out of a tree and landed onto my hood. left 3 nice dings. i have a white truck so they are not noticable at all. talk about a lucky few weeks i was having.

it doesn't matter if you purchased the truck new or used. years from 00 to 04 silverados are covered. not sure about gmc but i assume they are as well. if you go to www.chevrolet.com/owners there is a recall link that shows the first letter that i believe everyone has gotten so far. the link might work as www.gmc.com/owners as well.

I wouldn't say that those recall cables are gonna be here real soon, from the way things sound, it's gonna be July before we see the new ones. Hopefully my rep is wrong, because Gm's got a big black eye on this one. If you do break a cable and bend a hinge or damage your tailgate, they will take care of it, regardless of warranty.

I saw a report about this recall in the news about 7 weeks ago. Funny how it took this long to get out the notice to us. Read the first line in the notice about their commitment to us

Then you consider how slack they are are in a situation like this which could possibly cause bodily harm

i would say they were very slack in this. i don't think anything would have been done if a few tailgates hadn't fallen off while riding down the road.

yeah my friends tailgate fell off and now it is a pos my tailgate is 18 years old and the cables are still good. and what the hell are they, to ashamed to have a real recall or what. talk about lame who wants temp tailgate cables and have to wait for some good ones. some people need good cables and not junk ones, so i think they should get there asses in gear and replace the things i mean how slow is gm?
oh yeah the idiots should replace the stupid tailgate if it is damaged by faulty cables and it should be painted, and if it dont match they should have to paint your whole truck`. that would teach them a leasson for being so slow and not having a real recall. They charge enough for the trucks they should be on top of recalls. get your act together gm.

Okay get this, I take my truck into the dealer today for them to change my oil and change my cables and tell them my tail gate got damaged when it fell on the road.

The guy couldn't tell me if they were going to cover the tailgate repair until tomorrow. He says they decide on an individual basis and that his manager will have to look at it.

Its pretty obvious that the gate hit the road and got scrapped up.

It happened about a week before I heard about it on the news and I had been waiting for the recall notice.

So what makes the decision so tough

I mean there is a recall out and the problem they are bandaiding for now has caused damage on my truck.

You know Dodge is much better to deal with when it comes to problems.
I had 3 Cherokees before this truck and any problems were taken care of no questions.

I hope they just tell me they will paint that tailgate I dont want to have to call GM

the biggest problem i see with GM is they have so many products and so many consumers that they at times, could care less if they lose customers over their service. Dodge, well, they need their customers so they tend to go out of their way to help fix a problem.

Why the hell would the cables be breaking anyways? Are the ends just pulling off of them? I stand on my tailgate all the time. I ran three loads of boxes to my storage unit yesterday and every time I stepped on the tailgate I kept thinking, Is this gonna be the straw that broke the Camels back?? Nope still holding. I am guessing that it will bend the hell out of the gate when it folds over the rear bumper and hits the 2" ball I have hanging off the receiver hitch.
