However I had instruction on TIG, didn't want to screw anything up.
thanks, I'll keep this thread going with updates.

So Far just Sheilded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). A36 Carbon Steel, E6013 sticks.

The instructor did say we are going to be using some cool sticks next week, didn't say which ones though.

I really like the updates, keep 'em coming.

Maybe the cool sticks will be 7018 rod. I think that stuff is used when looks count.

7018 is a dream to weld with when the machine is set correctly! Its' a nice crackle pop when you weld, hit it with the chipping hammer lightley and all of the slag pops off and it's, well, worth crying it's so beautiful!
I didn't have a chance to bring home some T-Joints that I did, so it's be monday when I have pics posted.

They're alright. I don't like the spatter produced. Also, if you notice on pic 2, my weld falls lower from the joint at the end. This can cause failure and probably would not pass a welding test. Sack of money, geeze how did I know someone was going to ask that? It's just where I put my money for my truck payments.
Post some of your pics. Your probably doing a lot better than the rest of the students in my class... "Hey cuz, where's the switch to turn this thing on?"

That's sooo funny. Our instructor showed us the first night where to turn the machines on at, then told us, "now don't be coming over here and just pushing buttons when you don't know what they do" "We run a professional welding school here and that's how I expect you to act"
of course, I agree with him, just funny you brought that up.

Also what our teach told us, was to push in on the stick a little to help control that spatter.....well, and as we come to the end of our material/weld so as not to burn too much into the metal.
