I've been trying for three semesters to get into this Welding Class.
However, since I haven't been to JC in like forever and your student registration date depends on how many times your a concurrent student.........well it took me a while BUT;

I'm in (WELD100)!!!
woohoo! I should be certified by the time I'm done with the whole program

It will be so nice to have the ability to make my own brackets and what have you.

Welding is a great skill to have. I learned how to weld in my metals class in high school. I Just went out in the shop and turned the machine on and started practicing. 2 years later I have perfected MIG welding, I can also Stick and TIG weld better than anybody else in my high school (except another student, which is just as good as me). I am going to be entering a welding contest for Georgia High school students, I should at least make state, and if I'm extremely lucky I would make Nationals in Kansas! Welding rules!!!!

Wait till you can lay down a aluminum tig bead. That was a great accomplishment for me.

I've only had a chance to lay down an aluminum TIG bead a couple of times. We only have one piece of 1" angle iron 12" long and I used it. At first I had to much heat and "dug" into the metal. After adjusting my foot a little I had one that was near perfect. Aluminum is very finicky to weld, you can't tell if it's overheating(won't change colors) so in no time a big hole blows through. Then you have to move pretty fast with the gun and sorta sweep with the aluminum rod very gently to get it to travel and puddle well. I will be definitely getting my shop teacher to order some aluminum for me to practice on, got to get ready for state right?
One rule of thumb that holds very true. Just because you can lay good looking welds on angle iron or scrap metal doesn't mean your going to weld good on actual work such as Bar-B-Que grills and such where verticle, overhead and working with different thickness metals with definitley tell if your good or not.

Woohoo, Laid my first surface welds tonight, Out of about 20 students I'd say I was mid group in quality and straightness.

we used A36 CS and 6013 sticks. I got about 9 good beads end to end. I was shaking more than I thought I would.
