Default Ignition cylinder recode?

Guys,
I need to replace the ignition cylinder as mine has begun to give me problems.

I contacted a local dealer and the guy told me that I would have to have the cylinder coded for my keys. Basically, setting the pins in the correct spot.

I have never heard of this, can't find a referrence and as far as I know these keys aren't smart.

Can someone shed some light on this? It's really embarassing to hold the key over and wiggle it around for a minute or two waiting for it to fire. Then there is the fact I hate it when something gets worn out.

Ignition switches have to be pinned to match your key. Have you ever seen a guy at Home Depot or similar set a deadbolt lock? It's the same concept.
