Default How effective is OnStar for vehicle tracking?

I was curious how effective OnStar is for tracking down stolen vehicles. Anyone have any experience?

My buddy had his Escalade stolen twice. The first time, the thief was smart and cut the one wire behind the glove box that makes OnStar work. It was found on its' rotors behind Lowes just about a mile down the road by a cop driving by.

The second time, it was tracked by OnStar and was found easilly.

From what I understand, if that one wire is cut or if the radio is pulled out, OnStar is defeated.

that is correct. that shuts the power off to the device so they can't track it.

It's also nice the radio can be removed without any tools. (DOH).

At least on my '02, it was. Not sure about the '03+ setup.

OnStar is very helpful if the thief is dumb.
Did not know about the radio thing, tho. Interesting! Either way I like the system in our Trailblazer.

When I was having trouble with my PCM, I called On-Star to get my truck towed (wasn't running) and the guy got an additude and said "Where are you at? ; Your GPS isn't working!?!!". I told him my vehicle wasn't running and needed to go to the dealer.

So, By the way he freeked out, it tells me that if your PCM is out, they can't locate it.

Hey KTM, did you get the 5.3 or the 4.2 in your TB?
