Default Help Please (Starter?)

I have an 06 silverado V<AX. 6.0L auto, ext cab, 2wd. only mod is a cai and exhaust right now.

i drove home last night 400 miles, get to the house shut the truck off and 20 minutes later go to start the truck to pull her in the shop to let it cool down for the LT header install and she wouldnt start. battery checks out fiine. 12.8 volts. its at 100% on the machine. checked all relays. i think its the starter. so i go out this morning and it fires right up. which leads me to believe it is the starter and its getting heat soaked. just dont want to spend 200 bucks on a new starter if you guys think it might be something else. thanks larry

Could be the starter...could be the ignition switch also. You'd really have to get the condition to re-occur and test to see if you have 12v to the starter solenoid while cranking. If you do, the starter is poop, if not, you have another problem, such as the ign switch.

It could also for some reason be security. You didnt exactly state what the starter did or didnt do besides not start. Did it click or anything?

if it was the security system, the truck would turn over. I know that my neutral position sensor is bad on my truck, and it will occasionally prevent the truck from turning over; when this happens, the radio will still turn off and the gauge cluster will zero, so it's getting power to the ignition. next time this happens, turn the key on, put the truck in first gear, then back in park and see if that will let it start. If that fixes it, then your NPS is bad.

If it does it again get out and hit the starter with a mag light a few times. Then try to start it again. If it starts than the starter is bad. Mine would do the same thing. At first it was really intermintent then started to do it just about every time I shut the truck off. The good ole mag light trick works wonders if the starter is bad.
