when you take off the gas pedal is tough to press down till you mash it to the floor.

this is on a 99 silverado.

 

need to clean your throttle body...

 

get a can of throttle body/ carb cleaner and a rag and clean the throttle body. just remove the intake hose, and work the throttle open and closed while scrubbing it

 

I find a toothbrush and carb cleaner works well too

 

thats what a friend said, but i wanted to get more opinions. should i clean some while its running too?

no, don't try running it without the intake tube in place, you need to draw the air accross the MAFS or it either won't run or will throw and engine code... or if you are having a bad day it might do both

 

To do it right, I always take off the whole throttle body and clean all corners good. You don't do this very often so I say take your time
for better results.

 

take the throttle body off and clean it. there are only 3 nuts holding it on and the throttle linkage and 2 electrical connectors. It is a good time to incorporate the throttle body bypass . The gasket for the throttle body is like an o-ring. Can be taken on and off 100 times with no problems.

With the throttle body completely removed you can use a tooth brush and get everything spotless. I personally use 3M throttle body cleaner. I stay away from carb cleaner, there is a teflon coating on the throttle blade that most carb cleaners will remove. The throttle body cleaner is specifically designed not to remove the coating.

With the throttle body removed it is much easier to work with. I usually do it once a year at least.

If you take off the throttle body for cleaning, do the throttle body bypass and cut the egr tube down.
