Default Gas Guage intermittant

This has been bugging me for a couple years now and I am just to lazy to take it to the shop.

2001 Chev. Silverado 1500 HD LT.

The gas guage will suddenly go from accurate to empty. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. It will either read accurate or completly empty, nothing in between.

Any ideas? I assume it is a short somewhere, but I am not sure where.

Sending unit. Mine did the samething. When I replaced my pump with a high flow unit I also replaced the sending unit.
G.M is the only one I could find that will sell just the sender (145$) everyone else wanted around 400 for whole pump assy.

It could be a short but I would bet money its the sending unit.

Definitely the sending unit, I had to have mine replaced too. I think it was about 180 for everything.

The sending unit in the tank is a common failure...mine's flaky too. I keep living with it and spending my cash on mods instead of repairs. Until it completely pukes out I'm gonna let it ride
