Default Fuel Gauge Problem (Yes, I Searched)

Everyone else seems to talk of the gauge showing less than what they have, but mine is the opposite. It used to tell me half tank when i was almost empty, but now it tells me whatever it wants. I drove ~175 miles home and it never read below 2/3 of a tank. Today it showed slightly below 1/2 and I remembered how on the fillup on the way home it took 20 gallons for ~180 miles (yeah, about 7mpg, but i figured out that issue). I tapped the tank and got the horrid hollow sound, put it in drive and it sputtered, but went. I made it to the gas station, put in $5 and it then read 3/4 of a tank again. What is broken? Fuel sending unit? Gauge cluster? Where can i get to the sending unit wire and what should it be reading?

Sorry for the long post.

It's the sending unit. If you know any good lawyers please contact them. This seems to get the majority of 99-01 and some 02 pickups. I'm ready to blow $125 on a new one, but am kind of hesitant because how do I know if GM fixed the problem if they won't even own up to it?
