An equalizer is a must with this rig, without it the bumper would probably drag on the ground. Equalizers always make an improvement, but with the avalanche if you use it when unneeded with that trailer, it takes too much weight off the rear tires and will wobble to the point you are taking 3 lanes of traffic if you have never experienced it. You can use one if you feel necessary, but if it were me i would save the $500 for something else. A sway controller is nice for any trailer, and they are pretty cheap.
If you are lifting wieght off the rear of the vehicle it isn't set right. If you are pulling a trailer unloaded it needs to be set for the trailer unloaded or removed. Having one set wrong and lifting the rear of the vehicle is just stupid.

Not trying to start an argument, just stating my opinions

The equlizer hitch is something that if you use it, properly set up, you will wonder how you ever did without it. I highly recommend a trunion style rather than the round bar. It holds more weight and is easier to set up IMO. I tow a trailer daily and used both styles and have sound the trunion much easier to use since there are no pins to move around ( and loose).

Spend the money and see how much difference it makes. I till be well worth it.
