Default Engine modding?

I can grasp the whole making your **** look good, but not sure about making it fast. Ok so you whip some *** here and there, but are you racing 24/7 every single day, every single minute? What happens when the tracks shut down for the winter? I can understand an exhaust and intake mod, maybe headers also, but things like a stall, cam, nitrous?
Maybe I'm just growing out of the whole modding your motor thing, but I'm just curious as to what drives you guys to do what you do. I get tired of standing around in parking lots talking to guys about their cars and how fast they are and blah blah blah. Please share your comments, thoughts, motivations, etc etc.

Well I run my **** how it's driven daily...

FULL Weight, PUMP Gas, REAL Tires, ETC

I don't really care if someone's truck is .5 faster in the 1/4 mi with NO interior, no spare, no tailgate, etc. Hell, let's toss the A/C and heater too...then why not the glass for plexi windows then??? "Oh wow, aren't we cool with a tin can on the street". I paid WELL for having an LT truck with leather, heated seats, OnStar, etc. then all the other stereo stuff I've added too...I enjoy it all. I'd rather lose and still be comfortable than win with a tin can.

What if ya get a flat tire?

Are you gonna take a female out in a overly noisy vehicle and have a good time? Hell no.

Also I feel that... sure you can run a 12.70 on slicks and cut a 1.8 60' time...but what can you muster in reality? A mid 13 if you're lucky? Reality is stuff I mentioned above...

The mods I do are to enhance drivability and performance. Decent cams are cool, exhaust systems, as are power adders in moderation also. But when it gets to the point where you vehicle is more of a burden than fun, that's when you cross the line. Changing valve springs every 6 months, logging and retuning weekly, etc. I also need a vehicle still able to be daily driven if something happens where I need to drive it or sell it quickly.

Feel free to poke fun if need be, but a vehicle that can run really fast on the strip isn't always as fast from a stop light or a 20mph punch...

Thats a very good question. I think its an adrenaline rush and for some people it makes them feel young again.

I think your in denial, it happens to all of us I have told myself to stop spending money on the truck, but I cant, its a sickness. You will want it too look better but when your done with that you will turn to modifying to engine again. No one can deny the feeling of being pushed in the back on their seat or smacking down the occasional car/truck in the lane next to you, or roasting the tires every once in a while. However, I also dont want a really fast *** daily driver either because **** will break too much, I would be happy in the 12's/low 13's. But I also like apperance mods just as well.

well I'm in the process of adding an extra 150lbs in stereo equipment to an already heavy chevy (1500HD) so we are all not about the almighty fastest truck.

however, there is a certain appeal to a really fast truck as well.

for me its more like an internal wrestling match between wanting what I want to be comfortable and wanting what I want to go fast.

but neither is really needed, just something inside me saying I would be happier if I had navigation to play with, or I would feel more at ease parking somewhere with an alarm system, or I would smile a little bit more if I could hang with a mustang GT or similiar, and if I can feel the bass as much as I can hear it, then life must be better because thats what I think makes life better.

sounds like I'm suffering alright, but happy non-the-less!

For me I do race it just about every day. I commute 150miles per day and I get on it at least 3-4 times on that trip. There are soo many people otu there to race I wanna be up to par should I decide it is a saf eplace to do it.

It's all about the rush of winning or just shear acceleration. I have owned a few fast cars and now I am enjoying modding the truck. I've had a 500+rwhp Mustang, a T/A that ran 11.6 N/A, hell even my Vette is no sloach for being almost stock but there is just something about smoking a sports car in a 4x4 truck

I agree that stripped dopwn tin cans suck for daily driving but when you are at the track every tiny bit counts. If you lose you can't go around saying, well if I had taken xxxxx out I would have beat you or, I can pimp ho's in my ride so that's why it's slow. That **** doesnt fly at a track. You either win or you lose, that's how the crowd see it and that's what drives people to such extremes.

As for being able to duplicate track times on the street? Sure, stick that bad boy in 4wh Hi and stab the pedal. Easy as that. That's why I am not racing a 2whd.

Some of us actually enjoy wrenching on our vehicles so a little bit of data logging and minor adjustments is no big deal. As fro changing out valve springs or other major things on a regular basis, I just have to say, that's why you choose your combo wisely. With my big cam I dont have to do jack. I use a low lift cam and I have not had to adjust anything on my truck since we installed it
