carb'd 5.3/6.0 vs 406
In the next few month or so im going to be swapping out my 5.3 for a 6.0. i also have another project im working on it's a 83 chevy caprice. i was going to build a 406(using a 400 block) to go in it, but im thinking about going a different route. im considering droping the 5.3 with a carb into the caprice with some stage 2 5.3 heads, or if i can find another cheap 6.0 i may consider that. My question is how would the carb'd 5.3 or 6.0 compare to the 406 power wise? im looking for a lot of low end torque. the 406 would consist of an eagle rotating assembly, forged flat tops, afr heads, air gap or victor intake, and i haven't decided on a cam yet. which would be the easiest swap?

At first I was going to say that if you were to do a basic build on the 406 that the LS motor would most likely still be a better overall combination, as the Gen III/IV heads are so much better than anything the factory ever offered for the traditional small-block’s, but since your looking at springing for a set of AFR’s for the old girl, it should be capable to put out some very good horsepower numbers as well as the torque the motors were known for. It would still be hard to beat the efficiency of the newer motors though, but never-the-less I believe the traditional small-block would be the easiest to transplant into your Caprice.

i haven't seen any carb'd 5.3/6.0 with h/c dyno. any idea how much power a good street/strip combo would make? the car is going to be driven on the street a good bit,but i'll also see some strip action too.

If you're looking for a lot of low end torque, stick with the 406, those engines are torque monsters, plus it will be a direct swap into the Caprice while the 5.3/6.0 will require some creativity and fab work.
FWIW, my father (professional race engine builder) builds a lot of 427's starting with Dart 400 blocks, that run high 9's in the 1/4 on pump gas...

what all i would need to do a ls swap into the car?wire harness, ecm, adapter plate for 700r4, engine mount conversion kit,and what else? with a h/c/ 6.0 and a 200 shot of juice i should be in the same hp/tq range as the 406 correct?
