cant find a squealing noise
#1
howdy. new to the site, but no where new to Chevy trucks and cars.
on my 2000 4wheel drive, i have a squealing noise coming from the engine. it sounds like its coming from maybe the power steering pump. its not real loud, but loud enough to be heard. now, when i rev the rpms up, it goes away. would the pulley bearing do this? i figure a bearing would continue the noise at any rpm. i had someone tell me the other day that it could be an intake gasket leak. he had a similar problem of a squealing noise that went away when revved up and new gasket fixed it. it doesnt sound like its coming from the intake area, but noises can be hard to chase down sometimes. i dont like to throw parts and time at a problem to hope that fixes it. any suggestions on how to test either of these? or does someone have another thing for me to look at. its driving me crazy. TIA.

Get a long screw driver or pry bar and put the handle to your ear and the tip in the area of the bearings on the accessories such as the p/s pump, alternator, etc. Be very careful not to get caught up in the moving engine belts. You could also remove the belt(s) and start the truck to see if the noise goes away, if it does you narrowed it down to something at the front of the engine and not an intake vacuum leak
The problem could just be the belt...or one of the tensioners...
