Well I loaded up and headed camping out in the hills. About 45mins of driving and suddenly I started to smell somthing warm, I blew it off because there was some old POS in front of me that I figured was burning a little oil or somthing. Then I started to feel the truck pull hard left and apon braking it pulled right HARD! I pulled over right away to find that my front left caliper must have locked up. My wheel was burning hot I'm amazed my tire didnt blow! I had all my tools with me but I left the jack at home . So I hit the back of the caliper a few times with a hammer and did a couple hard braking forward and reverse. Then continued to my campsite. It was back to normal and the wheel cooled off.

Anyone have this happen?
Could it dirty brake fluid? Or a bad caliper?

Currently looking into budget front brake upgrades useing the search bar but if anyone wants to chime in I'm all for easy answers

Brake fluid should be flushed at intervals to help prevent this from happening

Calipers do seeze up from not being lubed

 

I flushed my brakes in May when I changed all fluids. Tomorrow if weather permits Ill see how shot my pad is and whatever other damage may have happened.

 

If the wheel was burning hot, the pads are most likely glazed. Replace frt pads and that caliper.

 

Slide pin tabs need to be properly lubed

 

If it got that hot the seals might be trash as well. Might not be a bad idea to order a rebuild kit or just get a reman'ed caliper.

Had to work really late the last few days haveent gotten a chance to check it out yet. Hopefully tomorrow I can get to it.

 

Word of advice if one did it, replace both along with the hoses!!! Seen it happen way too often replace one caliper and a week later other one takes a dump... Hoses can get trash in them or break down internally and cause a sticking situation and heat travels quickly... Especially if youre wheel was that hot, the fluid was either already boiling, or about to boil, put a rubber hose in boiling water and see what happens to it.... Then amplify it by another 100 or so degrees...

 

Still havent gotten to check it out been worked like a slave driver and its been cold out. Been driving the Benz instead but its getting a life time alignment from firestone tomorrow.

I'm looking at new brake stuff now seems like the 05+ already have the good calipers.
