ABS light coming on and off
#11
Are you experiancing any parake pedal pulsation at all? The is a TSB on the Corrosion of the ABS sensors on those trucks, but it usually accompanied by a bit of pedal pulsation, kinda like a warped rotor.
Otherwise, the ABS light randomly coming on and off makes me think you have a defective ABS Wheel Speed Sensor that's going bad. They are notorious for failure. They are right on your front hub assemblies. If the ABS light came on and stayed, I'd lean towards the ABS module or pump being defective, but if it's going off then it's not the ABS module unless you have a bad connection on the harness connector going to it. The randomness of the lamp is most likely contributed to an ABS sensor. Easy to replace, but not the cheapest things in the world. Contact me with your VIN and I'll run a GMVIS on it and see if you have an Open TSB or I can get you the aprt numbers to the ABS sensors.

i too have this issue. will GM do warrenty work on car out of OEM warrenty for free? i have 135K on mine.
will a brake fluid flush help?
its an 01 2500HD 4x4. no codes. but i checked when the lights were not active. could it be that there is only a code when the ABS and brake lights are lit?

With 135K on an 01 vehicle your warranty has long expired and you'll have to pay. I don't see how a brake fluid flush will help...you might need to try checking the code after the light has illuminated without turning the key off. I believe that some ABS codes that aren't hard codes will clear when the key is cycled.
Might also want to check all of the grounds that bolt to the cab and engine, I believe that there's a gound on the driver's side to the back of the cab that corrodes and causes the symptoms you describe.

Nah, a TSB is just a diagnostic aid for the technicians...if it was a recall it would be covered. There is an ABS recall on some of our trucks that involves cleaning or replacing the front ABS sensors, but the symptoms are pre-mature ABS activation, not the ABS light coming on.

You can probably cure that by cleaning the rust off of the sensors and their mating surface. Just be aware that it is possible that a sensor may break on removal and need to be replaced. They replaced one of my sensors for whatever reason when I brought it in for the recall.
