A good friend has one on quodzilla 100 hp setting he is 2 tenths faster then me on motor. There is no doubt that I do not have the low end TQ of a diesel but I never had problems towing it does shift down to drive sooner than a Dmax but I never had to go down to third yet. Gas milage sucks when not pulling a trailer I can not come even close to a Dmax but towing its not soo much of a difference. I get a little tired of bashing on the 8.1 like it's not worth the iron there made of.The Dmax is great engine I love the power they can make but the allison has trouble holding the crazy TQ when you start playing whith them. BTW with the help of a 200shot of N2O I've cut the 1320 in 13.04@104.97 so far what it lacks in TQ its made up for it in HP.
The particular 8.1 that came in my old Silverado was a turd.I'm not bashing anything, just telling everyone the facts about a truck I put 58,000 miles on in 22 months.I won a judgement from GM because of the oil burning.Trust me when I say there is nothing like buying a new truck with 2 miles on it and having it burn a quart of oil every 500-600 miles from day one. Some have had better luck but I know 5 different people that have 8.1 engines and everyone of them burns oil.Anywhere from 800-1200 miles to the quart is the average. These are people I know personally not internet friends.4 of the 5 are getting a Dmax when it's time to trade, the other is buying a Super Duty.I don't know what you mean on the fuel economy,I get close to double the 8.1's mileage while towing with my Dmax.Same trailer, same car in it.The Dmax gets better mileage pulling a 8000 lb high profile car hauler at 75 mph than the 8.1 gets empty. When both trucks were empty on long trips the best I could ever get with the gasser was in the low 11's mpg.The Dmax has gotten as high as low 19's mpg.Again not bashing just stating facts from owning one of each.

Paying $4K for an 8mpg improvement is a little steep, don't you think? $4K will buy a LOT of gasoline ...

After 600 miles, 200 of them pulling 6K lbs of car and trailer, the oil level is where it was at when I drove it home.

I talked with the previous owner and he said it used a quart every 2500 miles or so. I find that acceptable, although I would prefer it didn't.

The deisel vs gas debate will rage on. Like I said above, I've owned deisel vehilcles and will never own another one.
