Default 4.8L what is its potential?

Was up guys
so tommorow im going to look at a 06 reg cab 5 speed 4.8L 2wd. i want a 5 speed bad cause i miss my 6 speed diesel.

anyways
what kind of mods get these trucks to run with diesels, lightnings, stock mustangs, camaros, trans ams?
All cars i have drove and like but cant turn away from a silverado or sierra.

Keep in my mind i don't want to run at a track just want a quick truck(13s to 14s in a 1/4mile). This will be my dd but i can always by a beater if i get into some heavy mods.

Heads and cam combo?
exaust & headers?
intakes?

Or to get the truck to run fast i need to drop a 6.0L in it or 5.3L?
or can i drop a ls1 in it? some body on our local board is selling a modded ls1.

thanks for any post
if you cant tell this will be a new project. Never got into perfromance mods.

Well I think that anyone will tell you that speed is relitive to how deep your pockets are. But I'll give you a quick rundown of what I know.

I don't know what to do for running with diesels since they are torque monsters, low end is not a strong point of the 4.8.

The best mod for your money is a tune, there are several sponsers on here that will do a good job for you. I have a Blackbear tune, it's great.

For cam the majority of people will tell you not to run anything over a 220/220. But there are more cam discussions than you can shake a stick at here.

Get Long tube headers, don't bother with shorty headers, waste of money and time. Pacesetter makes a good set. I'm running a set that I got from eBay that are pretty good for the money. search eBay/OBX headers

If you want to keep up with some of the vehicles you posted you might want to drop in the 6.0. You can put an LS1 in these but you have to use the accessories from the truck. But since you have those already it should not be that big of a deal. Or you could go FI.

I won't say that 13's or 14's are not realistic times but you are going to be sinking some cash in it to get there. I don't know how it will be as a DD, but then again some of the guys here will be able to give you some insight on that.

From my experiance my 4.8 RST 5-speed is great fun . But the more I drive it the more speed/power I want out of it. Whether that means an engine swap or going FI cash will be spent.

Intakes are not my area. LS6 and LS1 intakes are swapped around here, there are a write-up or two on here. For the most part the Truck intake flows well. Some people are going with the TrailBlazer SS intake.

Hope it helps. Also use the search button. Almost all of the questions have been asked before. Although some topics are re-visited on a regular basis.

Hope this helps. Enjoy

no need at all to swap intakes on a 4.8.

with the mods in my sig and 4.10s instead of 3.73s my truck will run possibly 12s on motor and it runs 12.0 hopefully 11s on a 100 shot. and with that im still getting 22 mpg

now that is through a 4l60e not a 5 speed but i know a good cam and full bolt ons (LT headers, exhaust, intake not manifold just intake, lower gears, good tune, and maybe UD pulley. every little bit helps on these trucks.

i also have pulled a good bit of stuff out of my truck for weight reduction without sacrificing strength or drivability.

That's pretty impressive of your truck. Good to know there is hope for my 4.8.

I am in the mid 14s with an ext cab 4.8 with just tune, intake and exhaust on 26" tires and some weight removed, no trans mods and crappy 3.42s. They respond well to mods.

i had the tr220-114lsa in my 4.8 before my ls1 swap. I loved that cam. i had 3 diff cams in the 4.8, and that one was my favorite. pulls very strong, and would be even better with a 5 speed. Cam, LTs, CAI, tune, she'll run good!! and later on, throw u some 4.10s in the rear!

Trust me on this one, 06tx4.8 knows what hes talking about!!! i have a 4.8 and recently put a 222-224 on a 112 lsa and it pulls hard and torque is instant when i lay into it!! basically everything he listed is what you'll need to do! i have the cam, cai, longtube headers, catless y pipe, vette servo, shift kit, 3200 stall and tuned... oh and i should add mines a daily driver as well.

I'm glad to hear u guys having success with the 4.8L. I drove truck today and bone stuck I had to double check to see if there was a v8 under the hood. I also drove a auto 5.3L the power difference shows.

The stupid dealer wouldn't move on price they wanted 12000 on the road. I call previous owner and they only gave him 8700. I offer 11000 on the road they said no. Truck has 36000 miles 2wd

Just out of curiousty do they offer the 5.3 in a manaul. You guys got me pretty much convince not to worry about the 4.8

Nope. No 5.3 in a manual.

I've got the 4.8 with a manual and of course it ain't the fastest thing out on the road, but it sure is a hoot to drive. Been driving manuals since I was old enough to drive, so it was kinda a no brainer about what kind of truck I went looking for when I bought mine.

They did make manual 5.3's in '99, only year they did though. 4.8's are great motors, I love mine
