396 ls engine?
#1
is it possible? I have a friend who wants to make an ss clone out of his 69 camaro, but he wanted to update it with some goodies. His plan was originally a large cube sbc or mid sized bb, but my swap got him thinking about an ls motor. so we got to thinking and thought it would be cool to make a 396ss camaro with an ls motor, but I don't know if you could do it. isn't a stock bore 6.0 stroked a 402? any thoughts?

As close as you're going to get is a stroke of 4.125" with a bore of 3.905". I found an Eagle LS crankshaft with a 4.125" stroke, then you'd need a 4.8, 5.3, or 5.7L block to bore to 3.905". That ends up being 395 cubic inches.

I don't know the numbers(bore x stroke) but, Mecham Performance offers a 396 package

IIRC the late 60's 396 was actually a 402, but advertised as a 396 because GM had a factory passenger car 400" size limit on their engines until 1970. Then there was dealers with special packages like Yenko who dropped in 427's in Novas, Camaro's, and whatnot. Vettes could have 400+ inch engines because they weren't "passenger cars". Could be wrong, read it in an old muscle car book a long time ago.
