Interesting. And all the research I did on this truck and missed it having DOD. But according to the tune file it say enabled so I'm sure you are correct. Wonder why I don't feel anything when it goes into 4 cylinder mode. Maybe GM has it perfected awfully good now???

There are/were failures in the lifters mostly, but they seem less common now.

They're slowly getting them knocked out. I can't understand for the life of me why it takes gm so damm long to fix problems. These engines have been out 5.5 years already they should be perfect by know.
On a truck by truck basis DOD doesn't do dick but across every truck they make it's enough to help with their overall CAFE ratings.

AFM/DOD can make a huge difference once the truck has been geared and tuned to take full advantage of the technology. GM grossly underutilizes AFM technology.

So lower gearing gives better mpg. I think too if GM had tuned the trucks where they shift at a lower mph like the Corvette it would help too. At light throttle shift mph is less with my Corvette and it's geared taller.
I think why I have not notice my truck having DOD is all the converter slippage. This chart shows how much. Pulled up 6th as an example but all gears are 40 rpm slippage.

4X4 is not a big thing,my 04 was the first one truck I have had with out it,my 97,96,95,82 all had 4x4 only time I really ever used it was when we went to a mud bog or it was snowing on my way in to work or on my way home.
I was thinking now about a 2012 GMC sierra ext cab short bed 2wd, with the 6.2 and six speed, wanted to stay under 40,000 and it looks like I can.

My 2011 Silverado CCSB 6.2 4x4 LT NHT was $32k, MSRP $41k. You can definitely get what you want under $40k. I bought mine on Valentine's Day 2011, so you will be in the exact same boat as far as the timing of the purchase goes. Good luck.
