My crazy aunt wants to ditch her 2001 Yukon with 90k +/- and get a new Hyundai (sp?) SUV. It's paid off and has every freakin option imaginable on it (my uncle used to work for Delco, so he picked up a Demo). She just doesn't want to put new tires on it and figure out why the check engine light is on (knowing her she lef it running while filling it up in the cold). Should I buy it from her for 9k or make her keep it, it's a tough choice...

There's only so much you can tell people that have their mind made up. If you honestly can convince her that the CEL is no big deal, then get her to keep it.
If she won't listen to reason, its better for you to benefit than some bastard car dealer.

BUY IT!!! $9K is what a dealer would give her for it. A dealer would turn that around and sell it for $13 (worst case). I have an '02, and I was offered $9,500 for mine when I went on the lot looking for an '07 CCSB Sierra 4x4.
Besides, it'd be nice to mod a 5800# SUV to run fast times, and surprise ricers.

I agree that you can't show some people the light no matter how hard you try. I would make an honest effort to change her mind. Show her that even her big old suv running 10,000 miles per year (assumed) getting 15mpg average over those miles is still better than the Hyundai averaging 20mpg over the same miles. If her gas cost her $2.25/gal she's only going to save $375/year in fuel costs or $31.25/month. It gets even worse if you factor in a $200/month car payment. (approx $10,000 to trade financed @6% for 5 years) If you take out the fuel savings it's going to cost her about $170/month to own the new car. In less than 4 months of driving her yukon she could save enough money for her new tires rather than buying the new car. And you keep saving over $150/ month (reduced number to compensate for error) for as long as you own the yukon. That money will buy a lot of anything you want each month. It doesn't sound like much, but I know I'm not too good to turn down that money if it was just given to me.
If it's what she wants and the money's not an issue I think it would be great if it makes her happy. That's all you have regardless of the numbers. Just make sure that the frickin "stealership" doesn't make the money off of her choices.
Good luck buddy.
