Default 1999 Sierra 2500 4x4 rebuild

I have a 99 2500 with a stock 6.0L with 225,000 miles on it. Due to sentimental reasons my wife and I are going to either rebuild or replace the motor/trans when they die. I would like to eeek some more horsepower/torque out of the new motor since we use it to pull horses and it will be my weekend toy.
I am trying to decide if I should rebuild the existing engine/trans and maybe have a few performance mods added or if I should buy a "pulled out" LQ4/LQ9 and have some mods done to it. I thought I heard that you can't rebuild the motor in my truck due to the cylinder being sleeved? I'm not sure if thats true or not. What would ya'll suggest and do you know of anyplace around chattanooga or knoxville that could build the motor?

Depending on how much extra oopmh you are after and what your goals are. For a good all around package get crate lq9 and slip a mild cam in it call any sponsor to the right to get a cam set up for how you use the truck. Call GM and order a brand new SRTA 4L80 which is the stock tranny for your truck and you are good to go. Both the new motor and trans will have a 3 year 100K mile warranty that are good nationwide at any gm dealer. While you are at it replace all belts hoses and waterpump put a new set of wires knock sensors and knock sensor harness on it. And you will have a truck good for another 200K.

But to be dead honest with you if this truck has not been worked incredibly hard and has been cared for 225 isn't anything to worry about. I'd drive it till you have a major failure of some sort then look at doing upgrades. Ive had these trucks come through the shop beat to **** with 375K on them and still humming like a swiss watch. The only thing I'd do now to avert disaster is belts hoses water pump and fuel pump to CYA if they are still stock and untouched.

Get a junkyard 6.0/80E combo, get a trans. cooler, and get a shift kit in the truck. If your budget allows, throw on a supercharger. If not, a small cam and proper converter will do just fine. Whatever route you choose, make sure to get a good tune. My 'ol lady's mother has the same combo in her 2500. She pulls 2/3 horses, atleast 3 or 4 days a week. Over 250K miles are on the truck now, and it runs just fine. Regular maintenance goes a long way.
