'05 L33 5.3L engine rattle
When I start my truck on cold mornings it sounds like a diesel until it warms up. I have a friend with the same motor and he says his will ranomally chatter (his has more miles). I thought GM solved the noisy 5.3 problem? What is going on in there to cause the noise?
Thanks,
Mike

Sounds like the infamous "piston slap" that afflicts some of these engines. You'd think by 2005 it would be fixed but it is probably just less prevalent.
I'd at least try taking it to the dealer to see what they say...even if it's BS. It would be on record as having a problem.

Re:
I remembered hearing about the first few years of the 5.3 & 6.0's when they had the problem. What exactly was the problem with those? Quench height too close? Insufficient skirt depth?

I went to the dealer to have them check and its nothing, they brought me to another truck that had that problem and he says mine is normal, i guess im just used to riding in quiet engine cars. Also it might be just the type of gas maybe?

I would suspect they are going to tell me the same thing. Although it may not affect engine life, something in there is making the noise, and if I do keep the truck it will have an engine that doesnt make noise if I have to build one myself. I may be picky, but I have had and built myself several 5.7L motors that made no noise, several of which ran better than the L33.

Its FACTORY, welcome to the world of piston slap. Its my inderstanding it is due to insufficient piston skirt length. Not a big deal after the engine warms up the cylinder shrinks a little and most of the noise goes away due to the piston being more stable due to the smaller bore size. Not a big deal. My 418 even has it a little although its hard to hear due to the cam and exhaust but it is there slightly. Welcome to the world of GEN IIIs.

2 things to get rid of that real quick next oil change run Syn 10w30 instead of 5w30 and don't worry about the gas you can run 87 oct but if you want it real quite run 93 oct. I for get why the octane matters but theres a thread here somewhere in diagnostics secton.
