Default Z06 Camshaft...'01 or '02?

I want to put a cam in my new 6.0 before installing it. There are a few cams I'm interested in from CompCams, but they are expensive. I am really considering a Z06 cam and springs since they are cheap and don't require tuning. I really need to be able to run on a stock tune using my HPPIII to raise the rev limiter. Any suggestions on weather to run the 2001 Z06 or the 2002 and up Z06 cam? What kind of power increase can I expect? I just read an old post where BigTex said he got 32RWHP from the 2001 cam . Thats kinda got me thinking about goin' that way? Help!

Go with the 01 ZO6 cam if you are going to try to use the HPP3 and the 02 if you are going to get some tuning.Either one will pretty tame in a 6.0 you'd just need more revs than a HPP3 will allow with the 02 cam.

I put an 01 in my 5.3 and it worked well untill I got it tuned right, then it worked great. I bought a big comp cam used for $150 shipped. I wonder how a stock 6.0 runs w/ 5.3 tuning?

I don't mean to post jack here but I had a similar question. I have a buddy who is doing heads and valvetrain upgrade on his 03 Z06. He would sell me the stuff pretty cheap and I was wondering if it would work on a 5.3 especially the heads.

We're gonna find out here in about a couple weeks just how a stock 6.0 runs with 5.3 tuning. I plan on using my HPPIII on the 6.0 as well. I just can't decide on a cam. I really like the comp .212 .218 .558 .563 XE High lift cam that BigTex recommended, but its gonna cost 3 times what I can get a Z06 cam and springs for. I just don't know if I want to spend the money, and I am also afraid it may lose some drivability with that much lift. I don't want to have to get another car as a daily driver, thats kinda defeating my purpose here.

I'd go with the Comp 212/218 I think you'll be a lot happier with it in the long run.It would be a better choice both power and drivability wise. The difference in cost is more than worth the hassle of living with a bad cam choice. You've got to remember a ZO6 weighs a lot less than a truck and has a 6 speed.

Comp makes a 212/218 .522/.529 114LSA and they also make the 212/218 .558/.563 115LSA high lift cam. I am just concerned with losing drivability with that much lift. I even thought the 02 Z06 cam at .551/.555 lift was a lot. And let me ask this, if BigTex got 32RWHP out of his 01 Z06 cam, what kind of power increase is common with cam swaps. I mean, what could I realistically expect with the High Lift comp cam .558/.563? Thanks.

The 02' Z06 cam is really mild in a 6.0L. My buddy had one and it defiantely requires a stall but it made decent power. He then installed the 224/232 cam and it was a whole different game then. But he did require tuning with the big cam. Drivability is fine after the Nelson tune and cam swaps are so easy in our trucks it shouldnt be a big factor.

I never dyno'd my 02' Z06 cam but it made no difference at all till after 5000rpm so I wasn't too happy with it. My new cam makes power all over but still pretty high in the powerband.

Stock I made peak power at 241.8rwhp @ 5000rpm. With my new cam I make 270rwhp @ 5000rpm. But I continue to make power till 5900rpm (304rwhp) then it stays at 304 till the 6500 rpm rev limit. And I still have some tuning and exhaust issues to work out. So that is 30hp over my stock power at the same RPM, 67hp from peak to peak, but I am making almost 100HP more at 5900rpm and above which is where I cross the line at in the 1/4mile.
