Will towing a SS Imp hurt?
#1
Hello all, well ImpalaFest is coming up in Texas and I am thinking about towing my pops 94 Impala SS over. Can I just tow it straight up, or do I need some weight management in the suspension? I have read many a post on towing, but still confused. The only mod I will have by then is probably the nelson tuning.

Dual axle trailer that I am borrowing from a friend. I don't know the specs on the trailer, he said it would carry that beast easy? Mileage is about 700 one way I think, maybe a little less.

your truck will pull it, hopefully the trailer has brakes. depending on the load distribution/tongue weight, you may need helper springs or better yet air bags. if pulling the car on forward loads the front of the trailer too much try backing it on. you want weight on the tongue but you don't want to be pulling a wheelie. don't know how you would measure the weight except at a public scale, but if you exceed the max tongue load you'll need to find a different trailer that distributes the load better. e

You may exceed the rating of the stock Class III hitch......that trailer is gonna be ~1800lbs or so and the car is ~4100lbs (5900lbs total), the stock hitch is only rated to 5000lbs
I've exceeded hitch limits by ~3000lbs before with no problem but it's not really reccomended

i agree, the weight rating of the hitches are really underated ,guessing for liability issues. i'd be more concerned about rear sag than the hitch coming off. i have the hd did'nt realize the yukons were rated that low. e

I tow a 12500lb 35ft boat with my truck every now and then, and have no issues (yet). I would say just watch tranny temps, a temp gauge could be cheap insurance. If anything try get a 10K hitch and you'll never have to worry about weight distribution again. Good luck, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Your Yukon with 2WD is rated to tow 8100 lbs with a 5.3L and 7800 lb with a 4.8L. IF you have gear in the truck and/or 3 row seats, that weight is subtracted from your tow rating. Hope that helps. By the way, I used to tow a 18 ft open trailer and my 3200 lb corvette with my stock Yukon and after the first 30 miles I would forget I was towing anything. With your setup I would not worry, Just make sure you have about 10-12% of the weight on the tongue.
An easy way to measure is with two bathroom scales and 2x4 2ft long and a 2x4 4" long in the middle of each scale. With the car on the trailer hook to the truck, put the scales on either side of the JACK and center the 2X4. Then raise the trailer off the truck and look at the weights on each scale. If you have over 250 lbs on each scales or more (up to 310) then the car is in the right spot.
Hope this helps.

Make sure you have a good hitch. Check all the bolts on it and make sure they are nice and tight too.
This is what could happen if you don't have everything squared away. My truck weighs in at 4200 and the trailer is rated to weigh 2000, but I don't think it's quite that heavy.
