Default Why would a steering pump issue also affect braking?

On one of my dad's 2500 Series GMC Savanna vans (2000 5.7 2wd)... it just recently had a loud vibration and obvious problem with the steering pump. I traced the hose to the back of the pump so thats how i determined that its a steering problem. However, the line leads to the distributor... the vibration is worse when you turn the wheel and the brake buckles and shakes terrible when applied.

I was wondering... why would the steering pump have anything to do with the brakes? Is it bc that hose leads to the distrubtor? Or am I completly wrong all togetther? (the hose that is vibrating leads to that lower driver's side pulley.. which i beleive to be power steering)

I'll have it at the dealership tonite.. but Im just wondering why it would cause both things to act funny and why does the pump go with only 89k miles on it?

I think the 3/4 based trucks have the powersteering pump driving the brakes. They dont operate off the engine vacuum. So that could contribute.

Well.. the stealership is living up to its name. $600 for parts and labor for the steering pump.

I just got done bitching at how much of a rip off Hardy Chevy is... I can get a steering pump for $197 plus shipping.. and if i really looked i could probably get it cheaper. They want to charge me out the *** for this ... They want to charge $300 for the pump and seal kit and hoses and than another $307 for labor.. are you kidding me? I can change this thing out within the hour... im so pissed right now, i just had to get that off my chest.. and to top it off i have finals out the *** this week and next and the van needs to get going.. so ive gotta get it done... ugh i hate being ripped off... i hate it.
