Uhh.....wha.......

Parish, I am using the serial port, NO adapter.

BigTex, I'll try that if I can decipher what you said.

BTW, OS is Windows 98

To find what BigTex said right click on My Computer and click properties, then go to the Device Manager tab. Look for ports and something, your com ports are listed under that. Double click on com1 and check the memory address and IRQ settings. If those are off by default change them, reboot and check. If they go back to some different settings, look for the settings in the BIOS.

You know he's been around a while since he knows the addresses and IRQ numbers like that.

I think BigTex has fought with old versions of Windows before.

Yep, just what Flyer said. On the ports section in Device Manager, you should see COM1. When you click properties for it, the last tab is rescources. It should look like this:

Notice that check box with use automatic settings, if your port doesn't show the same settings as the pic, you'll need to uncheck that box, and select some of the other configurations (the option is greyed out until that box is unchecked).

I've been at this for a while.

My setting are identical to the picture you posted. I tried com ports 1-8 and no luck. Com1 did the same old check cable blah, blah, blah
Com2 just sat there
Com 3-8 "connetion failed"

I guess I'll give up and get a new laptop. I don't know what else to do. This one is plenty powerful for edit. Its a pentiumII w/64mb ram

Go to RadioShack and buy another cable (the one that goes from the box to the computer). I had the same problem. 1 $10 cable and it was fixed.
Good Luck
