Default Why couldn't you "belt-drive" a turbocharger ??

No, really, I'm being serious here.....why couldn't you split the case of say a T66 and replace the impeller housing and the exhaust driven impeller with an engine mounting plate and a custom-cut pulley, then run a longer-than-stock belt to turn the turbo. If you left the compressor side alone you would end up with a belt-driven turbocharger with no exhaust lag.....right ??

I mean this is basically all that a centrifugal supercharger is (Vortec/Paxton) isn't it ??.....

you could put a REALLY small pulley on the turbo to spin it REALLY fast so you would make good boost down low and as long as you used a standard adjustable wastegate set at say 10psi you would be able to limit total boost to a reasonable level

and then (assuming this whle scheme would work) you could mount up two of them and come up with a twin-turbo setup without all the hassels of exhaust routing, custom headers, and HEAT issues

I know it would be harder than I make it out to be but could it actually be done ??

i think thats the idea of the centrifugal supercharger such as the ati .. etc

maybe it can be done? i dunno

Thats what a centrifugal supercharger is. However direct drive is not enough RPM for the turbine, thats why ALL centrifugal blowers are internaly geared.

yes, you must step up the rpms with gearing to spin the impeller blades fast enough.

superchargers use power to make power, Turbos make free power technically. they actally plug up your exhaust a bit for normal driving.

you will find in some places they cal centrifical s/c a belt driven turbo or maybe it was the opposit calling a turbo a n exhaust driven s/c. dont rember but have came across it while doing research.

o and as far as the twin issue i will have custom twin ati's one day not any time soon though.

Belive it or not but yelo has a good idea, so much so that somebody has already gone ahead and tried it. General Electric and General Motors (EMD) make diesel elctric locomotives GM has been consitantly able to offer more torque with a 2 stroke turbo diesel. Well GE is now testing a gear driven turbocharger that overruns (over running clutch) itself once exhaust pressure is sufficient. Turbochargers are more mechanically efficient then blowers.
