[QUOTE=DarkFox1]probablly an outdated post, I know a lot of forums hate for n00bs like me to revive an old post heh

I called up AFR and they told me the ls1 heads will not work on vortec engines?? they sell a set of "vortec" 180CC heads (part # 0912) for $1200 a pair, but I find it hard to beleive the ls1 heads wont fit considering the motors look almost exactly the same?

they are talking about the old "vortec" gen 1 & 2 motor.

man, do your tranny. that's a big truck and it's no fun to have a bunch of power if you can't move. just a thought............

Does that mean that I can literally pull parts off the LS1 in my Camaro and bolt them right back onto my Z71? If so, I'm going to do the simple things like a pulley and ported TB first and see how that goes. Basically build them each with the same concept and game plan.

The pulley is different AFAIK, but there is quite a bit of interchangeability between the motors. The accessory drive is something like 5/8" farther out from the block on the truck motors.

But the recipe should be similar--good flowing headers/exhaust, CAI, cam/springs, ported TB...all will work just as well on a truck motor as a LS1.

And for the record, our truck motors AREN'T LS1's!!! They are GEN III motors for sure, but they go by LM4, LM7, LR4, etc.

Technically speaking, you are correct, but they are all part of the LS1 family of motors.

well, I've been doing a lot of learning and a lot of studying as time has passed here, I saw some info on a site not too long ago talkin about buying the vortec engine heads and porting them for custom ls1/ls6 applciations, so I'm sure they fit, I'm suprised an AFR tech. lead me astray, from what I've heard they're kind of the foremost authority on heads.

I also found from my research.. taht money doesn't buy much lol, I still wanna do something to my engine, but I dont think its gonna be in the budget.. dad says to put it all together get it running and finish the truck ebfore I try to mod it, but I have to spend all this dough for what? 265hp? sometghing like that from a 2k silverado 5.3? thats just so... 4cyl.. ish

Eaton Posi, stall TC, sts turbo kit, and some extra cash for a tranny when the tranny breaks.

Im on a budget also Ive only had a chance to do aem intake, exhaust and nelson tune. Ive got trans go kit, servos and 2600 stall coming up. From what Ive learned so far gearing and tuning play crucial roles with waking up vortech engines. Get the shift kit and remove all torque managment with a 93 tune from allen nelson after you get the intake exhaust done, then do a high stall. These mods will cost around 2000 (if your frugal) installed and give the most gains.

just my .02

tune depends on what you have done already which is not much and if you decide to do a cam (which is what i would do and am currently in the process of doing) and a converter (which is my fave mod to date) you might want to wait to do the tune afterwords and i saw you asked about nelson which has so many posts it is unreal nelson tunes seem unreasonably popular and for good reason i heard nelson (allen) is the best as far as ASM headers it would be good but too expensive if you are not interested in heavily modding your vehicle just my opinion. and i heard pulleys are good but have absolutely no experience with them. so in short after all this^^^ i would say head cam converter headers and tune would be great. and for driveability keep the head work low and the cam and converter small people like the trailblazer converter a lot
