Default Went truck shopping yesterday....questions.

I went to the GMC and Chevrolet dealerships across the freeway from my place. Man, I really like those Tahoe/Yukons but damn I don't want to spend $35-40K on a truck that will be used primarily for work and sometimes pulling my car.

I really like the GMC front end and side guards better than the Chevy's, and I also like the sportside beds.

How much are these dealerships coming off of sticker prices on new trucks? I really liked a navy blue GMC ex-cab sportside I saw, but it only had a 4.8L motor in it. That wouldn't be in the truck for long, I'd probably swap an aluminum 5.7L LS1 into its place.

Tony-
If you have a membership for the Sam's club (wholesale) They have a good vehicle purchase plan. I paid $300 over invoice...so they say... when I ordered my truck.

But the sticker was almost 26k and I paid right just over 20k not including the ttl and so on. I went through Premier GMC up in Kingwood/Humble. There new loctaion is on 59 just south of 1960 on the West side of Hwy. 59

Hope you find something good.

To be honest with you, it's hit or miss on truck dealing. A lot has to do with Quantity and how generally willing to deal they are.

On something like a pickup where they generally have a whole lot full of nearly identical p/u's, you can probably get them to move a little. I doubt you'll get them to move too much on a Tahoe/Yukon as it is a premium, high demand vehicle and they may not have as many on the lot. They know the next person through the door WILL pay the price they're asking for it, so they may not work with you.

Tony, I just happen to have a sportside I'd sell you. And guess what, it happens to have a hole where the motor was so you could put your choice of horsepower under the hood J/K I like my truck to much. Seriously, I would go with the truck over the SUV. With the racing intrests you have the truck IMO would better serve your purpose. Get the 6.0. Also , the Chevy is rumored to get a front end makeover for 2003,(kind of a cross between an Avalanche and current style) the GMC will stay the same as far as I know. The GMC is also generally 1k more than the Silverado because of some extra cosmetics. I like the front on a GMC a little better, but my Chevy with the Tahoe grille looks good to

Don't go to Lone Star Chevrolet. I went there and they would only go within about $1000 of the vehicle invoice. So, I went down the road to 1960 and went to Beck & Masten Pontiac GMC. They had a bunch of trucks, and they sold it to me for invoice, then you take the extra $2002 off, so, I got a 28,000 truck for about $23,000 at 5.9% financing. Pretty good deal if you ask me. And it is the GMC, which IMO the front end and the side panels look better than the Chevy.

Okay, some more GM truck questions.

1. I know the HD series has more optional motors like the 6.0L, but what else is included with the truck compared to the regular size truck? I do not need a 6.0L, and I could always upgrade the motor itself later.

2. Will the 4.8L motor pull my car and a trailer okay? It can't be that bad, we pulled my car from Houston to Kentucky behind my Dad's weak '94 Ford with the 4.9L V8 and it did okay. That motor probably makes about 150 rwhp tops. Keep in mind that this truck might only pull my car once or twice a month.

3. Is the cab size between the HD and standard size pickups the same? Is just the hood and grille different? Same dash too? Especially the extra-cab trucks, are they the same size inside?

4. What options should I avoid if possible, and which options would you recommend?

Thanks!

Tony

There is a 1500 series HD that looks like the regular trucks (hood and grille) but it only comes in a full door, not suicide rear doors, and it has the 6.0 in it. As you know, I pull my 6000# trailer with the 4.8 and it does OK except for 10mpg and talk about no areo dynamics on my trailer Just get the 373 and posi rear setup or let MTI do it like they did mine. Every thing inside is the same. The out side changes when you get to the 2500+ series HD except for the 1500HD. For the $1500 it takes to get the 5.3 over the 4.8 you could get the gear, posi, intake, and muffler. If your serious about a motor upgrade in the future, I would get the 4.8 and save the $$$ As far as options go, I only like power windows and locks, tilt, you know the standards. If the truck you are looking at has the chrome or steel wheels(Chevy not GMC)I have the cast wheels and tires (1000k on them)off my truck you could use or go aftermarket.

I got mine at Charlie Thomas. 45 South and BW8. It's only a regular cab, but I paid 20K + ttl. When your ready to buy, go at the end of the month. Dealerships will always cut better deals right before the monthly close-out. If you go at night, they will bargin more to close the deal. This worked for me. They started at $23500 and came down a lot as the night drug on. Wear em' down!!

Get a leftover 2001 model C3 !!!

Its a collectors item. Only one year of that model ever made, production run about 4000 (I think) made last year.

Very sweeeet ride. All wheel drive, 6.0 liter, 3/4 ton brakes (stops from 60-0 in 125 feet), 3/4 ton rear end, plush interior, two tone leather, etc....

A local dealer in Dallas had five 2001s a couple of weeks back. Stickered for $39,092. They had been on the lot since June. They were giving me GMS pricing just to get rid of it. I could have walked out with it for $30232 (thats another story).

Here is one:

Tony,

I just priced a 1500HD. MSRP was $31,060 and my drive out price was $28,500. That is more than $1000 over invoice if you calculate back.

Go to www.chevrolet.com and price out the vehicle you want. You can also go to www.kbb.com and get the invoice pricing.

The 1500HD 6.0 has a different exhaust than the 2500HD with the 6.0. The tail pipe is only 2 3/4" as compared to 3 1/2" on the 2500HD. Also one pipe where it goes over a cross member is crushed. Why they did not use the same exhaust makes no sense. I am sure the system they have is plenty of flow for a stock 6.0 but with mods those areas might need looking into.

If you find a Pewter with tan interior let me now. I want it!
