Exclamation Weak/Broken lifter?

I'm looking at a local LS1. I say local, its approximately 300 miles away but close enough for me to pick up. Anyways, the guy pulled it from his camaro because it had a broken lifter. I've never heard of a lifter breaking, however. The guy who owns it subbed the work out to a local shop. I spoke with the guy at the shop and he said that the lifter scratched the camshaft, so they removed it. Big deal. I have a cam sitting here in my room awaiting installation. My question is, is there anything else that I should look for from it breaking a lifter? Also, has anyone ever heard of a lifter breaking? I'd like to pick this up as I've been looking for an LS1 but I dont want to get it and regret it. Any help is appreciated!

we have seen a couple of lifters that the roller part gets pitted and takes out the cam... replaced cam and lifters and let it roll!! I would pull the heads and inspect everything, as a set of head bolts is easier than having to pull it back out. I think you will be fine

the heads have already been pulled for inspection. the guy at the shop said the engine was in good shape. i just dont want to dish out this money and end up with a lemon. i just had never heard of lifters breaking and didnt know if it was somewhat 'common.' thanks for the advice! other opinions welcomed as well!

I've seen a roller go bad and take out a lobe too. Go for it! Just be sure to tear it down and clean the oil passages before installing it if you want it to last.

how much would you guys say is a reasonable price for this engine? its the block, crank, rods, pistons, and heads (no pushrods, lifters, or rockers) Also, the block has no sensors in it. Also, it doesnt have a cam, cam cover, timinng chain cover, or the top cover with the knock sensors.

Depending on miles, anywhere from 200-400 is all I would pay for a rebuildable shortblock that may or may not have oiling issues. You can get rebuilder 5.3 iron blocks for that cheap too, so unless you're set on aluminum block to save 65 pounds, don't dig to deep into your pockets.
