Default Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump Install PROBLEM!

I bought a walbro 255 lph fuel pump for a mustang that a few guys on here are using. I got it all together and ready to install but the sock that came with the pump won't fit. I've seen pictures of guys using pumps without socks, but is that smart? Have you guys had this problem and if so how did you fix it? Can you buy a sock that would fit? The problem is that the sock has a hard plastic ring around the hole that the pump sticks in (that can't be cut off) the diameter of the ring is too big and won't allow the sock to recess up into the area where the sock is supposed to go.

The sock that came w/ my walbro fit fine. It has a metal ring that fits around the pump inlet. I did have to cut down the inside of the module bucket around the hole to get the pump inlet to protrude far enough.

Does the walbro sock fit on the pump if it is not in the bucket? Just to make sure it is the right sock for that pump.

put the sock on the pump and fold it up onside the pump and stuff it in the bucket. Thats how everyone does it.

And then run the sock through the hole from the inside? That means that the hole where the pump sticks through will have to be bigger. I was wondering about that but i thought the pump had to fit tightly and create a seal where it pushes through the bottom of the bucket... i guess that is incorrect?

I haven't really tried to stick it on the pump cause i thought it'd get stuck and i wouldn't be able to get it off... all you do is push it on there and the little metal pieces grab on correct?

put the sock on the pump while the pump is out of the bucket, then fold the sock alongside the pump like shown below lol

stuff that sucker in the bucket as it is, dont worry about reaming that hole or anything. the bottom of the bucket will sit at the bottom of the tank, i have ran my truck until the fuel light came on without any problems. Its literally as easy as putting the sock on and stuffing the pump and sock into the bucket and hooking up the two wires on the pump. The filter sock will not be pulled through the hole.

yep , thats correct. It fits snugly around the pump inlet. You should be able to pry it back off or you could just start to push it on just to make sure it is the right size.

This thread should help.

If you got the accessory kit w/ the plastic tube and the 5/16" rubber hose. Neither tube is long enough by itself. You can either carefully pry off and reuse the stock tube, like ranwalk did. It's a real PITA to get off. Or you can use the plastic tube and the rubber hose together w/ a 5/16" barbed fitting as a coulping. I attached the plastic tube to the pump outlet and cut off only what I needed from the rubber hose to make it long enough to reach the fitting at the top of the Module. I have reused the stock tube and used the splice method. Both methods work fine.

BTW what year truck are you working on? Is this the '99-'03 return style?

as far as getting the stock plastic hose off the pump barb its very easy, take a pair of pliers and squeeze the the plastic hose where it is attached to the stock pump. It will crack the plastic pump barb into then simply pull the hose off and stick it on the new pump, dont forget to use the hose clamp! lol.

Default More ****

The metal ring that holds the sock to the pump broke out of the sock when i was trying to install it and now i don't know what to do. Can i find a sock somewhere? I'm about to say **** it and not even use a sock... i'd hate to burn up a new fuel pump though
