#11
I've been away for a long time. I am not sure but if I started this idea in a post I had earlier:https://ls1tech.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ulti...=000508#000004
Mine is words not pics, but explains basically what they are doing?? Do I get any royalties?

On top of which, I didn't like the look of the stock airbox and didn't like the small tube from the airbox to the TB. I've got 496 cubes to feed and that stock system was simply a cork no matter what you do short of actually attaching the air filter to the TB itself.

I had a K&N FIPK on my truck when I got the idea for the ram-air using the stock intake. The stock intake performed better than the FIPK, not by alot but better, so I sold the FIPK. Then I got the UPD intake tube and lid, I thought the big smooth tube and high arcing lid would really help the ram-air. About 3 weeks ago I took the UPD lid and tube off and reinstalled the stock lid and tube. The stock lid and tube actually work better than the UPD lid and tube, I do 0-60 and 0-90 stop watch runs to check. The truck is quicker with the stock intake tube and lid than with either the K&N FIPK or the UPD intake. For that matter, my truck is quicker in the same runs with a Purolator paper filter than with either a K&N or AFE filter and their suppose to be performance filters. I'm not trying to start an arguement over someone's opinion, you have yours and I have mine. I don't think it's a hack job if you modify something that is stock and make it better. I've proved to myself that my home made intake is better than the two aftermarket intakes I've tried. The so called performance filters really don't offer a whole lot more either. This of course, is just my opinion.

Jim

Much the same thing happened to me last week when I removed the Jet power module from my 97 Tahoe's Vortec 5700. WHen I removed it, the truck "seemed" quicker, "seemed" more responsive and "seemed" smoother. My super calibrated butt-o-meter could tell.
Until you have CFM numbers of the stock pipe vs. any aftermarket pipe and you have before and after dyno numbers and/or track E.T.s to prove it, I'll stick with the aftermarket.
Also, you are comparing what most people have here. That being 4.8's and 5.3's. I have an 8.1 and no matter what it's air requirements are commensurately more than either of those.

Could you put up a pic of your 8.1 engine bay with the Volant? I have never seen one. Also what size is your 8.1 TB? Another thing, I heard The Other Guys have came out with an 8.1 mid length header if you were interested.
