The VHO has the LQ9 in it. This motor is 10.1:1 compression. Premium fuel is recommended by the manufacture.

87 octane is fine, but premium is recommended, not required

So you would run 87 octane in a 2004 Corvette They are the same compression Ratio, infact it says PREMIUM FUEL ONLY on the gas door of the vette.

I dont see how a truck with the same compression ratio that weighs more than a vette can run 87 octane safely. I hope an SS owner will chime in here and clear this up. I know they share the same motor.

**EDIT: the VHO and the SS share the same motor.

Yeah, I think mine says "recommended" not required. I think mine is on a card in teh glove box, but not on the gas cap or cluster. I've seen other vehicles that have that sticker saying premium required, but not my SS. I'm sure GM has the stock timing low enough to keep it from really detonating on 87 octane.

I can't imagine a full on detonation with just 87 octane. I can believe it pings though. If I run sub-par gas, especially the inter-city winter gas mix, it will ping pretty hard. Rolling into the throttle from cruise you can feel the pinging in the floor.

Well I stand corrected (although I would not run 87 in a high compression motor)

I don't run 87 octane either. I stick with 93, and try to buy my gas outside of emissions restricted counties. It runs much better and gets higher mpg with non-oxygenated fuel.

I have a VHO. I ran 87 in it on a road trip (why not, i'm not doing serious driving). I always thought regular was fine to around 10:1 cr. 11:1 will of course require premium. The lowest octane fuel that you can run without pinging is the best, because of its lower burn temperature, the car will run better!

Why is the oxygenated gas no good? I thought having the oxy. would make it run better (more oxygen=better burn???)That's all we have around here(I think). I run 93 and sometimes 94 oct. and have never heard or felt pinging so I guess it's ok. I'm in NJ and would love to know where a station is/or might be that sells non-oxy gas. Thanks for any input.
