Default Valve Train Issues, What Died First?

Damaged Morel 7717 lifter, bearings cam apart in rocker arm, broken valve spring. Not sure which part took out the others but eiother way I dropped a valve on a 17K mile engine, wrecked a head and piston but no cylinder damage. Ordered a set of Jonhson lifters yesterday, piston and rings are replaced. Anyone ever seen a lifter with the retaing clip stuck inside it?

1 bearing is missing from the rocker

Retaining clip wedge between bore and pluger.

You have to be a gambler to use single coil valve springs. I had a double coil outer spring fail with the result being a loud tapping noise, and I had a single coil fail with the result being a completely destroyed engine.

To me, it doesn't seem like anything in the valve train could break a spring. But I see your point, maybe a mismatched setup?

Cam is Lingenfelter GT2-3, BTR springs but I have had for so long I dont remeber which ones they are, rockers and pushrods are stock.
Johnson 2116LSR lifters should be here today according to UPS traking.
New springs are BTR Platinum Dual Valve Springs.
Looks like rain thru Sunday but I am off next week and should have time to start putting it back together.

Been so long, I had to look that one up.
207/220 duration @ .050 lift -.571/.578 lift with 1.7 rocker 118.5 CL

Other than the LS6 type replacement spring, I don't recall BTR Selling a single beehive unless they were something like a PAC?

Any way I would say based on the picture that the spring it self broke first. Everything after was just a casualty...
