Transmission blew up yesterday, need some advice
#1
While I was towing the car to the track yesterday my trans let out on the freeway. The truck is a 99 Silverado with the 5.3 in it. Basically 2nd gear was the only thing left. There is no reverse, 1st only works a little bit, 3rd and 4th are useless.
I'm now facing a situation, do I replace it with the 4L60E again or look for something like the 4L80E. Any pro's or con's? The truck is my daily driver, but I tow the car (2002 TA) frequently to the track. Something that could tow really well would be a plus. I know I'm going to replace the converter and transfer case as well.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Stick with the 4L60E and just get it built. Chuck at FLP seems to build some stout transmissions.
Make sure you put a nice trans cooler on the next one also if all you're using is the stock cooler. That'll help it out.
If you wanted to go all out the 4L80E is one bad piece but, is not a "direct" swap. Things like the driveshafts/crossmember/computer/wiring would need some customizing.
If it's your daily driver I would just get the 4L60E rebuilt by a reputable shop and put a nice cooler on it.

After swapping all the parts an getting all the custom work done to make the better tranny work, it will cost much more than just getting a quality bult 4l60e, or just getting a performance build on your existing tranny. I mean a lot more, more time, more money, more headaches!

You could get a GM Goodwrench 4L65E. I think they come with a good warranty, so you could trash it and have it replaced if you ever needed. FLP will only warranty for 90 days.

I might just stick with a 4L60E or maybe a 4L65E. Just looking for a cheap solution until I can get a new Duramax next year. Thanks for the input.

Make no mistake, our Level 1 transmission is far from a basic rebuild. Rated to 450 horsepower and 450 lb/ft of torque, this transmission is great for everything from stock replacement applications to bolt on cars to heads/cam modified cars. The shift firmess settings are customized for each unit, based on your car's setup and your personal preferences.
